Which rookie will have the most immediate impact?

Recommended Posts

It seems that since Gettleman has taken over there have been, as many as 5, rookies making an immediate impact to the team. This year I don't expect anything to change. Except the number.

If I had to take a guess. It would be between Devin Funchess and Cameron Artis-Payne.

Funchess is llegitimately the #2 with potential to be the #1. The opposing defenses will have to pick they're poison. Olsen, Benjamin, Funchess, Ginn/Brown. Funchess will get a lot of opportunities from the offense. Cam will spread that ball around and I wouldn't be surprised if they hit it off quickly.

Cameron Artis-Payne on the other hand has everything to gain. He's his own back and has taken over games for Auburn. Barring injury, he's clearly an option for Stewart. Fozzy earned his spot last year but he is a different type of back.

What say you huddle, what rookie will have immediate impact?

My money would be on Funchess. Shaq will likely have an immediate impact, but depending on how we use him he may not see a whole lot of snaps. If he's strictly our will he'd only see like half the snaps, if that. Williams could definitely have an impact if he wins a starting job but I don't really anticipate that happening. Feel like we want to groom him to be our longterm right tackle. Mayo will by a special teamer, and CAP will be nothing more than change of pace.

I think Funchess has the ability to make the biggest impact. Not neccesarilly in gaudy stats but in affect on the offense.

I can see Shaq taking a season or so to settle in to his role and Williams being a backup this season.

My 3 are Shaq, Funchess, and Daryl Williams.  Shaq and Funchess get the play time from day 1 - which seems obvious at this point.  If Daryl doesn't outright win the RT spot in training camp/preseason, then I think he eventually works his way into it by the end of the year.

I don't know about CAP just yet... as long as Stew is healthy I don't think we'll have a true #2 back.  Both Foz and CAP will probably split their reps equally unless the rook either comes in and proves he's outright better or worse than Fozzy.  Neither are taking Stew's job unless he ends up on the bike again - which is very likely I guess.

Mayo isn't seeing time unless something bad happens.

The thing about Gettleman's drafts is so far there have been a handful of UDFA gems as well.  Wonder who that might be this year, if any?

It's a good question that we don't know the answer to yet obviously. But I think one aspect of all those rookies having an impact so soon was the overall talent level of the team. As the team gets better less rookies make an impact...which is a good thing.

To be sure, we aren't All Pro at every position so I could see 1-3 having a large impact this year. I think Funchess for sure. After him it kinda depends. If Williams wins the starting RT then that's 2. If Shaq can pick up his very difficult role quickly that's 3. He's played many positions and even Bene said that playing a joker role in college made learning 1 position in the NFL harder.

I'd say that's it. CAP isn't winning the starter job and Mayo isn't either. So, 1 for sure...maybe 3.

Has to be Funch. Not only should he make some contribution to our yard and TD totals, but he should also help in getting other guys open. (Receivers and Backs) His ability makes him a versatile weapon that you can line up several different places.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
