Smith knows he burnt that bridge. Won't happen. I doubt JR would even let him at this point. He really made an ass of himself. Smith was the face of this franchise for a long time and will always be one of the greatest Panthers ever, and possibly even a HOFer, but he is a really shitty human being. Learn to separate the two.

You're the one who needs to separate the two, if you think he's a shitty human being because he talks trash and has a chip on his shoulder on the field. He's done a shitload of work for the community, by all accounts is a loving husband and father, and has had no off the field troubles with the law or anything like that. Can he act like a child at times on the field (or in interviews off of it but still football-related)? Absolutely. Does that make him "a really shitty human being?" Hell no. And if you think he won't retire a Panther then you've somehow made yourself look even dumber than you already were. It's 100% given that he'll retire a Panther.

I love how we can watch a sport where grown men hurl their bodies at one another in an attempt to (by force) make another grown man fall down, then tell the guys "hey its just a game dude, chill."

Have you ever had someone try to force you to the ground against your will?  It will invariably piss you right the fug off.

Now imagine the man who wants to tackle you is 300 lbs, 6 feet and some odd inches and runs a 4.5 40 yard dash, benches school busses filled with children and is not very friendly.

It just got real right?

Add to this you are only 5'9" 190lbs.

Don't you think being loud and angry would help you survive a little longer when that other guy knows you will tear his face off?  Think guys...think.

Here we go again.........smitty will go down as one of the best if not best panthers of all time Suck it up, and live with it....also lol at smitty not retiring a panther....I don't think dg could even prevent that Still confuses me how some think he "disrespected" the organization, he really only came after two people dg and Rivera.

And that view is wrong. The Panthers did as much for Steve Smith as Steve Smith did for the Panthers. They made a decision and it was a decision based Solely on Steve Smith and his actions. At the end of the day cutting Smith made the Panthers better (I don't think Benjamin had as good a season last year if Smith was on the team) and put the leadership into the hands of the man who the team wanted to be the leader moving forward (wasn't going to happen with Smith still here)

But it also worked out for Steve who admitted he busted his ass to get in the best shape his been in in years.... "to show them". He played well and was on a team that made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.

No I don't feel bad for Smith (there's a reason we never developed a #2 under him and it wasn't all USC curse or Hurney's piss poor drafting) and I think as a fan I can be more grey when it comes to Steve. Its not black and white. I DON'T have to love him just because he gave us X-clown and played here (he got paid well to play here) but I don't hate him either. I just don't care if he retires here or not because of the way he handled things... which ironically gave me all the proof I needed to justify cutting him and moving on.

How was my view wrong? The Panthers cut Steve, did they not?

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
