I think the Shula approach of telling people to wait....looks better if you are a potential future employer.

Now the Browns are a bad organization so they wouldn't care....

but McD should be in Charlotte IMO.  I get Ron is a nice guy but there is something to be said for getting your own business finished first.  Impossible for McD to have his entire focus on Carolina doing interviews.  You have to be making calls and go into the interview with a potential staff in place.   Lot of ground work for him to do to "sell" it to a franchise.

It would seem like a better long term strategy to interview for a job where you actually have a chance to succeed.  He may get to be the HC in Cleveland but in a year or two hes probably fired and then he may never get another chance to be a HC.  OR he could go to a better situation and either succeed or at least do well enough that somebody else may take a chance on him afterwards.  The only reason to go to Cleveland is a quick money grab and if thats what hes all about then good riddance.

According to Voth, the interview has to take place in Charlotte. Possible he is wrong about that or that Ron gave permission to be in Cleveland.

3.) Coaches on teams with bye weeks can only have one interview with each interested team next week, and that meeting has to be held in the city of the assistant's home team.

Also, for those saying he should stay the hell away from that job, it's entirely possible he is using it as a practice interview so that he has a better shot at a more lucrative job like Philly where he would almost certainly be a candidate.

Hate to see anyone with real football talent and a promising future end up in Cleveland.

Organization has a long history of bad decisions that make it hard for even a well seasoned coach to succeed.

Sounds like the Browns are hiring a bunch of football outsiders to run their organization this time, including the Moneyball guy and another fella from the Mets.

Can't make this poo up.  It is so crazy it just might work!

He's probably doing like any other professional would do who hasn't interviewed in a while.. you interview first with a job you don't really care if you get or not to get some interviewing practice.. and then you go on to interview for jobs you actually want once you have your interviewing confidence

Rivera and McDermott both stated how important it is to wait for the RIGHT FIT HC job. No way he thinks Cleveland is that job, right?

Where did either say it was the right fit? It's an interview.

You guys have to realize that being a head coach in the NFL is, to the majority of these guys, the dream.  It's an extremely lucrative job that who knows how many opportunities you will have again, especially in a league that loves retreads.

It isn't like McDermott spends his entire day strictly on trying to make a gameplan.  Him doing this interview isn't going to hurt anything and we don't even know our opponent yet.  It's not a big deal and I think it's rather ridiculous to expect someone to turn down an opportunity to be a head coach.

That may be true but if you aren't interested, but would you waste TONS of hours (prep time, travel, interview time) to interview for a job you don't want?

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
