that was my initial thought, but then again, he was only a kick returner because he sucked as a WR

If Steve Smith only returned kicks, he'd probably be Devin Hester.

But thats something we'll never know. So if he gets in before Steve I don't see the issue.

Don't forget that he spent his first 2 seasons as a reserve CB before deciding that he needed to be a WR.

On the surface, I think the best return man of all time should he in the HOF. But, then I look at some of the guys who aren't in yet. Edgerrin James, LaDainian Tomlinson, Torry Holt, Terrell Davis, Jason Taylor, Alan Faneca, and on and on. There's a lot of names out there who I feel ha e a much stronger argument to be in the hall than Hester.

This is a valid point. If Hester had developed into a decent WR he probably wouldn't have been returning kicks and punts for his entire career.

And honestly, he was the best PUNT returner of all time. There have been better kick returners. Dante Hall was a better kick returner IMO.

Guy is the only punter, but there are 3 kickers (Blanda, Groza, Stenerud) in as well. The bigger hurdles might be that there are no returners and/or no modern-era STers, and with the de-emphasis on punt and kick returning he'll probably get passed over by the time he's eligible even though he's arguably the best returner and definitely the best return specialist.

Blanda and Groza were not just punters. Groza was an offensive tackle as well and Blanda was a quarterback so really only stenerud was a pure field goal kicker. He is the first HOFer who was purely a field goal kicker.

As for Hester it really will depend on who else is there. Why pick him when you can pick Steve Smith who did much more than just return punts or kickoffs.

    • We don't have to tear down Dak to appreciate what Bryce did yesterday. Dak had 0 running game. If the cowboys were better, he'd be a legit MVP candidate if he keeps playing this way.  They did it with Ceedee last year, but they do a better job of anybody we play consistently of getting their best receiver off Jaycee.  Bryce was good too. If we just catch the ball that was intercepted, we probably win by 7+, and Bryce goes over 200 yards passing.  Biggest shift the last few weeks has been play calling. I thought Canales abandoned the run game way to early at times last year. This year he really seems to be sticking with it.  I still think Chuba is better at making 4 yards when there's nothing there, but Rico is better at making 30 yards when there's 6 there. I like the direction. Hopefully we can get Moton, Sanders and Coker back and really be dangerous. Our play action game is pretty deadly right now.  Unrelated: My favorite quality about Bryce right now is his ability to see the defensive hold and throw the ball there. He EXPOSES the officials when they don't call it. That one on Tetaroia yesterday late in the game was a bad miss on their part.
    • That sacks allowed number lookin juicy!
    • This is a game the Panthers should win... just the sort of game they lose. The Panthers have a bad habit that goes back years of playing down to the competition's level only to mess around and lose the game. The Jets game should be taken very seriously! But I want to enjoy the fact that they beat the Cowboys for at least another day or so!
