Your Ideal Owner

I'll take the Al Davis of the 1970's and 80's when the Raiders had the highest winning percentage of any team in professional sports. He took cast-offs from all over the league and resurrected one career after another and always got the best from guys people thought were long since over the hill.

"Just Win, Baby" and "Commitment to Excellence."

Yeah, he went crazy early in the 80's and a lot of players and coaches fell victim to his lunatic fringe, but back in the day, there was no better.

Kind of an offseason topic, but after a certain someone started a thread yesterday with a slight about JR, I started thinking about this.

Who/what would your ideal Panthers owner look like, if not Jerry Richardson?

Personally, and I go back with the Panthers to 1993 when they were awarded the franchise... was at the first preseason game and first regular season game and countless more since then. I've seen a lot of owners across a lot of sports over many years and JR is pretty great when you look at the whole picture. You can question him for how he handled the end of the Fox era, or the firing of his sons, or the firing of Gettleman... but I will defer to his judgement on everything because I don't know the whole story.

What I do know:

  • He isn't afraid to spend on his own players or free agents - as far as I know it's up to his GM
  • The team maintains a fantastic stadium
  • He has shown patience with multiple coaches
  • The players seem to genuinely like him
  • He runs a world-class organization

I can't really say there's another organization in sports whose fans I envy because of their owner. No owner is perfect, but JR sure does tick a lot of the right boxes.

You forgot to list his negatives, going to have to if you want credibility.
