PERFECT VS. THE AFC EAST

·         Carolina improved to 4-0 against the AFC East with the win over the Jets. The Panthers became just the eighth team with a perfect record against the AFC East since the divisions reorganized in 2002. Of the previous seven teams, five advanced to their conference championships and three won Super Bowls.

 

STRONG AWAY FROM HOME

·         With the victory, Carolina improved to 5-1 on the road in 2017. The 5-1 mark is the second-best record through six road games in franchise history (6-0 in 2015).

·         Carolina has won its fourth game in a row overall, the Panthers longest win streak since December of 2015.

 

HAPPY RETURNS

·         In a stretch of 2:11 in the fourth quarter, Carolina returned a fumble and punt for touchdowns to retake the lead. It marked Carolina’s first fourth-quarter comeback this season.

·         Luke Kuechly’s 34-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown marked Carolina’s first defensive touchdown this season, and first fumble recovery for a touchdown since Thomas Davis returned one last season against Arizona (10/30/16)

·         After the Panthers forced a three-and-out on the next possession, Kaelin Clay returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown. It marked Kaelin Clay’s second career touchdown (his first as a Panther) and the first Panthers punt return for a TD since Philly Brown returned one for 79 yards against Chicago (10/5/14).

·         It marked the first time since Dec. 8, 2002 against Cincinnati that Carolina scored a touchdown on both a fumble recovery and punt return. It marked the first time since 1995 that Carolina scored both in the fourth quarter.

 

NEWTON RUSHES INTO THE END ZONE

·         Quarterback Cam Newton’s 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter was his team-leading fifth rushing touchdown of 2017.

·         Newton is the only player in the NFL with five or more rushing touchdowns in each of the past seven seasons (2011-17). Only Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch (55) has more rushing touchdowns in the past seven seasons than Newton.

·         Newton is tied with DeAngelo Williams for the third-most total touchdowns (53) in Panthers history behind Steve Smith’s 75 from 2001-13 and Jonathan Stewart’s 54. Stewart scored his 54^th total touchdown on a 2-yard run in the third quarter against the Jets.

 

SACK ATTACK

·         The Panthers entered the game against the Jets tied for fourth in the NFL in sacks and added to that total with three on Sunday, totaling 32 this season.

·         Defensive end Mario Addison sacked Jets quarterback Josh McCown for an eight-yard loss in the third quarter to end the Jets opening drive of the half. It pushed Addison’s 2017 sack total to 7.5, second-most on the team. Addison has recorded 15.5 sacks over his past 18 games.

·         Defensive end Wes Horton notched a strip-sack of McCown in the fourth quarter that was returned 34-yards by linebacker Luke Kuechly for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 26-20 lead.

·         Defensive end Julius Peppers added a sack of McCown in the fourth quarter to give him a team-leading 8.5 on the year. He ranks fourth all-time with 152, including a franchise record 89.5 with Carolina.

 

FUNCHESS GOES FOR 100

·         Devin Funchess pulled in a season-high 108 receiving yards on seven receptions. His seven receptions tied his career high, which he’s already matched three times this season.

·         Funchess became the fourth different player (Funchess, Dickson, McCaffrey, Benjamin) to record a 100-yard receiving game for Carolina this season. It marks the first time in franchise history that Carolina has had four different players record a 100-yard receiving game in a single season.

 

TAKEAWAYS KEEP COMING

·         With a strip-sack by Wes Horton and fumble recovered by Luke Kuechly, the Panthers recorded their sixth takeaway in the last four games. Carolina only recorded four takeaways in the previous seven games.

·         This season, Carolina is now 6-0 when scoring any points off a turnover and now 6-0 when winning or tied in turnover differential which they won on Sunday, 1-0.

 

100-PLUS YARDS ON THE GROUND

·         Carolina tallied 145 yards on the ground against New York, improving to 6-2 when rushing for over 100 yards in a game.

·         Over the last four games, Carolina has averaged 185.0 yards on the ground, leading the NFL over that stretch.

 

McCAFFREY ADDS TO ALL-PURPOSE TOTAL

·         Christian McCaffrey accounted for 119 all-purpose yards (63 rushing, 35 receiving, 22 punt return) against the Jets. McCaffrey’s 40-yard rush in the first half marked the longest of his career.

·         He has 956 all-purpose yards this season, which ranks fourth among all NFL rookies this season. It also ranks second to Steve Smith among all Panthers rookies through 11 games.

 

NO 100-YARD RUSHERS

·         With Bilal Powell leading New York with just 34 rushing yards, Carolina has now gone 15 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, dating back to Dec. 4, 2016 against Seattle.

·         Carolina’s 15-game streak ranks third in the NFL behind Philadelphia and Tennessee.

Newton is tied for rushing TDs right?  Not counting passing?

    It always amazes me how folks feel the need to quantify a win. Like style points mean something. Man, it is tough to win in the NFL, especially on the road.

 

    8-3, and some folks have been complaining all year. Sheesh.

After this game, the panthers now rank first in starting drives without their best offensive weapon and also first in taking their best offensive player out in scoring situations.
