Now if you're going to tell me that 29 year old Smith ain't in this class of receiver,  then there's no reason to talk. 

 He is nobody's WR1, and that's how San Francisco was trying to treat him. So he had a bad couple of years.

In Philly,  he was realistically their third option,  so he didn't get a lot of run (and dropped 4 out of 60-something balls), but he came through in the clutch.  Philly may not have pulled it off without him. 

Just think of him as Ginn 2.0. He's largely a one-trick pony who might still have something close to that 4.36 speed (Philly fans did say that he was still fast), meant only to make defenses pay in the event that they disrespect his speed. Plus, he's a great locker room guy who has a couple of rings.  And,  correct me if I'm wrong,  his salary is not even guaranteed this year.  

Now of course I ask myself why him as opposed to Mike Wallace? Well,  Norv Turner knows Mike Wallace, and I'm fairly sure that Ron and Marty didn't summarily decide that Wallace wasn't what they were looking for.  There must have been at least one compelling reason why they didn't explore him further.  That being said,  Smith can provide the same thing that Wallace can, and Ginn did,  which is speed with so-so hands.

Thanks Dawg.  I would add that Smith's contract is unguaranteed (originally 3 years, $15m with $500k guaranteed)--so he would consider a pay cut for guaranteed money and an extension.  If not, we have no dead money for cutting him.  It is a good contract for us.

I actually have to come to like the move, provided they move on from Shepherd and look to add another piece at the position.

 

It really ensures we aren't in a disaster scenario as was so common throughout the previous regime where we put all our chips on one draft night opportunity to fix a position and when it doesn't work out we head into the season starting players who wouldnt make most team's rosters

This is key, Hurney likes the player and knows he can work that contract to significantly reduce the cap hit... would expect that to be announced very soon.

It is when it leaves you 19 mil to spend (5  of it will go to rookies) and still have holes at

WR (Smith is a deep slot #3), LG (Center Kalil missing 50% of games last 2 seasons and retiring after this season), FS, CB, NT, DE, RB, and a backup QB 

 

 

 

If we cut Shepard itd make me feel better.

 

If not, we have 4 Slot WR on the roster (Smith, Shepard, Bryd, Samuel) with a ton of holes and little to spend

I was concerned initially by reports Phi was cutting him.  Then I was worried about the remaining money and current salary on his deal.

Now that all the info is out regarding his guaranteed money being paid and we have 0 cap hit if we cut him, Worley for Smith was a good deal.

Unless you feel a significant loss from Worley, I don't see how this can be considered a bad deal. Does anyone think he could have fetched anything better than a 5th round pick from another team?

It's entirely possible Torrey is  just an insurance policy in the event we cant do any better at the position in free agency. Essentially just a way to hedge our bets and make sure we got the veteran presence Rivera mentioned. 

Ideally I would still like us try to improve the position in free agency. If we can land a better talent than Torrey then we can offer him a more cap friendly deal to us or let him walk with 0 consequence.
