Can Someone Please Explain to Me Why The Carolina Panthers Always Have Minimal Cap Space to Work With for Free Agency?

The Panthers has been too sentimental regarding contracts and player relationships in the past. Hopefully, new ownership changes this approach to running the team.

Sometimes you have to make the tough decisions that are in the best interest of the team, but may not be beneficial to the player.

Hurney could easily free up another 30+ million by making the right post-June cuts and extending Shaq. And would really only need to replace a Nickelback and add DT and WR depth - both could be upgraded through the draft.

Kalil - doesn't even play so no loss - 7.25M cap savings

Poe - Love is much better, so depth needed - 6.00M cap savings

Munnerlyn - could easily be upgraded under the cap savings - 3.50M cap savings

Torrey - was only a stopgap until the rooks got up to speed, WR depth needed - 5.00M cap savings

Olsen - injury prone, time to let go - 2.90M cap savings

Ross Cockrell - doesn't even play so no loss - 2.40M cap savings

Shaq - extend or cut and replace via draft - not worth 9.2M salary

Agree  on all counts except I'd like to give Olsen a go this year. If he can muster even half a season that's a hell of a duo with Thomas who will be the likely starter.  I'd also like to see if Cockrell is back to form. He's got talent.

So...if you paid a lot of money for Panther season tickets....plus the money for parking...plus the tailgate expense....you would be fine with tanking the season.

I guess you didn’t bother to read what I clearly wrote.

If mediocrity year after year is all you demand for your heavy investment and that keeps you snug as a bug in a rug, then so be it.

Hurney signing Gano to a big deal when we had a younger, cheaper, and better option at kicker sticks out as a terrible move.

It's not just one thing, it's lot of things.

Panthers can create cap room this offseason but it will require us cutting some of Ron's veterans.

Yeah , the Kalil contract was Gettleman’s worst mistake by far. If I’m not mistaken though, we could have moved on from him after last season with minimal damage, but Hurney restructured it. Right?

They had no choice. It was either 7.5M More coming off the top last year, and would already be gone or spread it out like he did. So it saved 7.5M last year. The only “option” in that bonus was how it went against the cap. He was getting it no matter what.

If it’s a “don’t kid yourself” certainty, tell us what options he had. What should he have done? This should be easy. Please be as specific as possible.

Yeah, Gettleman set it up with  that option bonus  so that Hurney didn't have any good choices. That option bonus was part of the 25 mil guarantee, would have been something like a 20 mil dead money cap hit to cut him that year. Had that bonus not been guaranteed, could have cut him with about 10 mil cap hit, still excessive, but better than what happened.

This isn't hindsight, said it here when the deal went down- that was an incredibly stupid deal.  The total  amount, the guaranteed money, the structure, Kalil's history of injuries. None of it made sense then.

The first word Yeah implies agreement with a theory that has already been proven wrong. In this thread.

Then compound by thinking it’s a good idea to keep him and pay him more. My response doesn’t make sense to you because you don’t understand what you’re talking about.

Yeah is an acknowledgement of what was stated previously. At no point did I imply that it was Hurney's fault but I did say that he was trying to create cap space, which he did. Your response doesn't make sense because it's an inadequate reponse to my post.

The Panthers can make easy cuts all over the roster to free up quite a bit of space. It's not like the cap situation is dire, or even bad. I would rather spend it while the Panthers have Cam and Luke than to sit with over 20 million in unused space going into the season after a Super Bowl run.

Divorce isnt cheap and the answer is yes. For a shot at being relevant, competent and winning more than every other year. Yes please. Paying for meiocraty has been more heartbreaking than flushing the toilet once and actually trying to be a good team every year. No one on the football side knows anything about that because they have never done it and constantly failed to achieve it. Tepper putting together a great organization outside of the football side. I am really interested to see how he would do there. Plus, did paying for your PSLs stop 2000 or 2010 from being trainwrecks? I dont like the taste of a tank season but we may already be there currently. I'll still be a fan and still go to games.

This isn't the NBA, tanking doesn't guarantee success in the NFL.
