Confused about moving to a 3-4

We have the two nose tackles with poe and butler, but who are our "big ends"? I see short as ideal but who is on the other side? Not irvin (he'll be at olb right?)

Those guys need to be close to 300 lbs. Also seems like we need another olb type like Irvin before we hit the draft.

Help out this confused panther.

I have been saying this for awhile.  If you watch film from the end of last year you will see that they often played Butler at NT and Cox sometimes at DE when they went to 3-4.  There were times that Butler also lined up at end.

I could see something like Short, Poe, Butler on running downs and Short, Butler, Cox on passing downs.

Either way if we are really going to a 3-4 you could make the argument that 3-4 DEs are as big of a need as anything we have on DE.

Look at it this way, what is the biggest position to upgrade:

3-4 OLB-Addison

3-4 OLB-Irvin

3-4 DE-Cox/Butler

Where did the announcement that we’re switching to 3-4 come from? I don’t understand why so many think this. It was said that we would incorporate more 3-4 looks to confuse offenses. Jourdan Rodrigue even said herself in the burns article that we were not switching to a 3-4 base.

I really dont don’t understand why so many fans think there’s a full 3-4 transition. And this isn’t just directed at the OP. There’s been so many posts about this and I’ve yet to see one person site any source saying we were going from base 4-3 to 3-4

KK has shown the ability in the past where he can.

But thats it, so we Seriously need to look for somebody

Sadly, it has been a while since KK showed much of anything. Those big paychecks in his wallet have slowed him down mightily.

I really dont like the idea that we are moving to a 3-4, i get the feeling that the Panthers want enough versatile players to play any defense they want based on the situation.

Yes. I think it’s about versatility more than an entire philosophical/personnell shift.  If you can be dynamic in your defensive sets then it makes you better at being able to counter someone else’s strengths.

if it's not a full switch and only something used half the time, then you're talking about a total of around 240 snaps in a 3-4 look through the whole season. About 15 a game and that's if the trend of base defenses being on the field less doesn't increase.

I used 25% of defensive snaps for a season for the above, about half of the Panthers base looks in 2017-2018 season. It's pointless to go through free agency and drafting for 3-4 players/ those who can play multiple fronts if it's only going to see that low of a snap count.

I think last year was the only season we can maybe call a down season for KK. And honestly I think alot had to do with the DC and the lack of confidence those guys had in his playcalling. Even Luke seemed to be pissed and unmotivated at times. With Ron calling the plays on defense things immediately looked better .

1 season?

Just the season before his stats were comparable to many of the other top tier DTs such as Cox.

For CMCs sake, lets hope he doesnt have a down year this season or this board will be ready to run him off

Belicheck and Wade and others showed consistently that not being stuck to a base scheme but rather making adjustments with versatile players to put them in positions for mismatches and best chance to make plays is light years better than staying in a base scheme.

therefore, while we will pick up pieces to make 3-4 looks more viable, I would say watch us float in and out of 4-3/3-4 packages. More of either can be brought depending on who we are playing and what is working against a team.

with that being said,.. I wouldn’t be shocked if 16 and other end up being DE/DT or DE/OLB hybrid players that can play both.

Ed Oliver, Christian Wilkins, DAndre Walker, Brian Burns Sweat and others that have versatility.

Yeh, with Ron calling plays they gave up an average of around 18 a game. He might suck at time management and giving vets preferential treatment but he knows defense.

    • I would say that seems like an odd comment from Morgan, but at the same time it's almost impossible to find a college QB declaring for the draft to have less physical ability than BY so you can assume almost anyone you bring in would be your go to QB sneak/designed run guy.
    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
