Rivera: Missed opportunities cost us the game

Hopefully this is Rivera's last year, has to be.  I don't know how much of offensive woah's can be blamed on him though.

Rivera is too f*cking lax. It’s obvious. When the Panthers got blown out by the Steelers, and all he had to say was “Sh!t Happens”, I knew his career was coming to an end. He’s getting old and doesn’t have the same fire anymore. Sure, the players like him, but who cares if the team is making a bunch of dumbass mistakes every game and losing tons of games. The losing streak hasn’t really ended, it might only be getting started.

If the Panthers start like 1-5 or 0-6 by the bye week, Rivera should be fired. And this is sadly not a wild pessimistic prediction. It happened last year, and it could EASILY happen again this year.

Had the pleasure of being in attendance. Some really positive things. Some unbelievably, inexplicably stupid things. A coach with good rhythm and cadence in terms of his play calling, playing the clock like a fiddle. Another coach who may have burned his second time out of a half just to yell at an official.

The game was a hot mess, and I think we all kind of thought it would be that way for week one. I just got home so let me manage my minions here and then I’ll post something more formal later on the site.

I won't lie. This one hurt.

Were there coaching mistakes? Absolutely. Was Rivera outcoached? You can make a pretty good argument for it. Yet even with all that, this game was infinitely winnable.

There are times when you can say things just didn't bounce our way, but this isn't one of them. While it wasn't perfect, good fortune gave us every opportunity to win this game... and we just didn't.

That stings.

Same old same old in year 9

nothing ever changes

there are great coaches and Ron is not one of them. This game changed many things for me. I hope it did for the new owner

With all the bravado about analytics from the owner all the way down, I’d suggest honing in on the basics, too.

I don’t need a staff of quants to confirm running  a jet sweep pass with 20 yards to go for a 1st down....inside your own 5 YL...is a bad idea.

Defense really doesn’t have an identity yet, but I expected that for a few weeks. I’m highly encouraged by everybody in the secondary. 28 took a really bad angle on a run fit, but everybody was really, really good in coverage. Most of what LA found success with was in the slot underneath the zone.

We previewed the Rams offense a few days ago. We forecasted their jet suite packages would make an appearance. They used it several times, in multiple ways. Woods got to carry, the back got a carry. They often times run play action out of it.

It was fascinating to watch their operation in person. Sucks Carolina lost, but it wasn’t ever going to be an easy game. Somewhere along the line, people simply forgot that LA won the NFC championship while Carolina was piecing together a 1-7 finish. That’s a really good football team.

and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Cam Newton should be running a slow tempo no huddle.  That should essentially be the base O when he is your QB.  That is the only time the offense ever finds a rhythm.
