Carolina Panthers at Houston Texans - How they compare

Here is a quick look at how the Carolina Panthers match up against against the Houston Texans.

The Carolina Panthers currently enjoy the 11th ranked offense and the 4th ranked defense in the entire league.

Houston has the 17th ranked offense and 22nd ranked defense.

Here a detailed look at individual each team's individual leaders:

Observations:

Even though they are underdogs, on paper this could be a victory for Carolina. They are either on par or superior statistically in just about every category.

Deshaun Watson is having a really good season despite being pressured constantly.

Olsen is quietly on track for another 1000 yard season.

Luke Kuechly is a friggin monster. 36 tackles in 3 games?

I'm surprised their deffense isn't rated better. Watson is playing well to be on a ranked 17th offense. This is a game we can win or we could poop the bed and I feel the same for the Texans. Looks like protection and pressure is key for us both.

Texans are for real. They hung with the Saints in the dome, had a tough win against a division rival Jaguars, and won another tough game on the road against a good Chargers team. This game is an excellent test for the Panthers behind Kyle Allen. If the Panthers O-Line plays well I think they could definitely win. If the Texans get pressure on Kyle Allen....I don't even think it will be close.

The Cardinals got pressure on Kyle Allen and he made them pay for it, numerous times! He was aware when the blitz was coming and rolled out and called the right audibles for help. I am hoping he can have a similar performance against a better defense.

I think we can stomp them in the dirt. It’s different now being able to play a full playbook and opening up the field. The ball gets spread around, run gets opened up. The defense has something to fight for, stays off the field longer so they get rested.

our run defense definitely needs to be better and we suck at stopping 3rd downs.

im sure that will improve

I have no idea how this will go. The Texans are in that transition point in their season where they could go up or they could go spiraling down... this might be the game to decide it. They have good pieces, but I'm not sold on their coach making a good team --- star players don't demand trades out of good locker rooms.

On our side, darn I am impressed by what we can do when we're hitting on all cylinders in all three phases of the game. I'm just going to have to see a repeat performance to be 100% here. Still, I like how the Panthers reacted on the road last week with a change-up at the most important position vs a team with its back against the wall.

      Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.

      I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
