THE CHARGERS TRADE A SECOND-ROUND PICK TO THE PANTHERS FOR CAM NEWTON

With Philip Rivers entering free agency, the Chargers are left with Tyrod Taylor and Easton Stick on their depth chart. Adding Newton is a rare chance to acquire a 30-year-old former MVP in what could be the middle of his career, and the Chargers can install a roughly similar scheme for all three of their quarterbacks. Newton is signed through only the 2020 season.

 

THE PANTHERS SIGN KELECHI OSEMELE TO A ONE-YEAR DEAL

Osemele is a couple of years removed from his All-Pro form, and his brief stint with the Jets was a fiasco when the team tried to prevent him from undergoing shoulder surgery, but the 30-year-old should be ready for 2020. Osemele's run-blocking would make him a great fit at left guard for Matt Rhule in Carolina.

 

MARCUS MARIOTA SIGNS A TWO-YEAR, $18 MILLION DEAL WITH THE PANTHERS

With Carolina coach Matt Rhule looking for a quarterback who protects the football and offers some mobility if the Panthers want to use RPOs, he goes after a former Heisman Trophy winner in Mariota. This deal locks in Mariota as either a low-end starter or a high-end backup to compete with 2019 third-round pick Will Grier.

 

THE PANTHERS ADD BUD DUPREE ON A FOUR-YEAR, $64 MILLION PACT

Dupree was inconsistent for most of his time in Pittsburgh, but he matched his sack total from 2017 and 2018 combined by racking up 11.5 sacks in 2019. There's obvious risk in paying him, but the Panthers are thin on the edge after Brian Burns and can add a 26-year-old from owner David Tepper's former organization.

I like the idea of a conditional pick 1st, 2nd or 3rd, based on 2020 performance, in addition to the high 2nd for Cam. This mitigates the loss if he is awesome and the overpay by LA if he's terrible.

 Osemele was good and I would take him on a cheap short contract but it doesn't really suit the purposes of a rebuild, and I think he will get better offers elsewhere.

 Mariota I can live without. Allen is a good backup who costs a lot less than 9 per.

If we sign Mariota as a starter or backup to compete and he has to compete with Grier we are fugged.

Much rather have Allen or grier, especially since their cost is peanuts compared to 9 million.

Plus the 2nd for Cam is not enough.

 

Teams needs about 10 giant "Ifs" in order to compete, take the medicine this year while getting/giving young player reps..... then go hard in 2021.

With his injury history, I'd be thrilled with a second. I'm expecting him to be cut or traded for a 3rd or 4th. Don't expect there to be much of a market if the Panthers move on.

      Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.

      Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
