Draft coverage impression

Recommended Posts

Interested to hear what others think about the coverage.   I actually like the format.  Could be due to the fact that I spent more imo watching this year but seems like there is more depth and concentration on the players than in years past.  Some of the back stories are really good.

I half expected a total cluster and have been pleasantly surprised.

I like the overall flow. I do feel like early trades didn't happen as much for whatever reason.

I'd like to see a similar format but with scouts and organizations having full access like in a normal offseason. There's a bit of fan input that is lacking, so if they could find a middle ground that would be great.

Unfortunately, this is a money maker since moving the venue from city to city. I dont' see how the NFL would stick with this.

Watched the Zoom stream at Panthers Draft Lounge - best draft coverage ever from a Panther fan perspective.

Four people were on there the entire night :

1) Panthers Media Honey

2) Jordan Gross

3) J-Stew

4) Jake Delhomme

They had guests on all night popping in for about 20 minutes :

1) Some C&W music dude I never heard of

2) Steph Curry

3) Luke

4) Ryan Kalil

5) Tepper

6) Peanut Tillman

7) Julius

8) Draft Pick Derrick Brown

Peanut and Pep stayed on for well over an hour until the end of the show.

Gross got talking technique and it was educational.   They went through the 'what was your' "NFL Moment" and 'Best Player you played against' and 'What's the hardest hit you ever took'.   Also related stories from the way back machine with a captains camping trip with Jerry R.

Impressions :

1) Jake competitive to the point of being a douchebag, but pulls back just in the nick of time

2) Pep is one of the easiest going guys I've ever listened to.  Not overly bright but quietly knows he can wreck the house if he needs to.

3) Kalil - a-hole.  Always thinking he's the smartest guy in the room

4) Peanut .  Actually is the smartest guy in the room.

5) Gross - cannot put this guy in a category.  Hard to believe he played left tackle in the NFL - he's just too small and not nasty enough.

It was good.  The skirt was pretty good to - she didn't have many football stories but never tried to make it about her.

Her name, dipshit, is Kristen Balboni. She seemed to have history with Tillman in Chicago; he called her KB. You forgot to list Coach Ruhle.

The focus on the players stories (rather than analyst babble) was nice.  Seeing the graphic on screen that listed a fact about the players mom and/or dad was pretty cool-reminded me of the older versions of Madden, which did the same thing when you would draft a player (ie. mother was college track star, father was HS basketball player, etc).

I was getting frustrated with the coverage so I took a Valium. It was better after that.

When NASCAR coverage starts at 1:00 there is a green flag time you can google. 1:23? great I'll tune in then. The actual first person drafted was 8:27. 17 minutes of that was reminding us there was a pandemic and we should be sad or happy depending on the moment.

Then they would say pick is in and wait six minutes to tell you who it was. Then they would talk about a dead or dying relative for 5 minutes while the next pick was already in. Then some images of people in masks. Often sepia.

A bit of  hyperbole for sure but like I said the second hour flowed much better. Because of the Valium.

    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh.
    • That is literally what I am talking about. Those were 53 man cuts. Not at the beginning of camp.  I would say the odds of Barno being back are extremely thin.
