Panthers have an easy out with Teddy in 2022. He will only cost 5 million against the cap to release.

Is the plan to draft a QB and use Teddy's second year to let the rookie sit and learn? Teppers is a long term guy and that is definitely a long term plan.

Would love that

I think the plan was always to use Teddy as a stopgap. That's why we were all over Herbert last draft.

You don't pay that much for "just" a stopgap, somebody thought he at least had a chance to be more than just a stopgap.  They can justify it, in that its not a long term deal and the overall money isn't crippling, but somebody thought they could win with Teddy.

It was a $40m gamble, so far its looking like it was a mistake.

If we were on pace to be 9-7 and Teddy was playing a little better I'm not 100% sure we draft a QB this year, are you?

As long as its not Hurney.

He did draft Cam

With the #1 overall pick.

But outside that, he's drafted Grier, Pickles, Tony Pike etc

Teddy is a class guy with a lot to teach a young pro QB. Just because he doesn't have it doesn't mean he can't teach it. In fact, some of the best teachers are mediocre at what they teach.

I don't get this line of thinking.

Think about position groups during the weak.  DBs have a secondary coach.  RBs have a running back coach.

QBs on the other hand, are probably getting input from the HC, the OC, and the QB coach.  Also the QB coach only has 2-3 player to teach.  Whereas most position coaches have more guys.

QBs are the most overcoached players on the field, not sure if you need to spend $40m to add a little bit more coaching.

$40m to spend on the O-line will help a rookie QB a lot more than anything Teddy will teach him.

Nobody spent $40m just for a coach. They knew he was a consummate pro...he does things the right way. They knew he was familiar with the offense. They thought he would make a good bridge to the next guy. In the meantime, ask any NFL player who they learned to be a pro football player from and it's almost never a coach, it's a fellow player, one that typically plays that same player's position. If it helps, substitute "mentor" for "coach." But it has as much to do with life and being a good teammate than x's and o's.
