the board is upset because the panthers are a lot better than we thought they'd be

coming into the season, almost all of us were expecting something similar to the 2001 season, where the panthers were dead last in offense and defense. there weren't any expectations.

all of us are upset because we're looking at a 4-9 record when the panthers could very realistically have 8-9 wins. this that or the other happens a few times and they're fine.

yes the defense is trash but there are legit pieces that have emerged. the kind of pieces you build a team around moving forward. and they might have had the defensive draft you point back to in five years and say "that's where it all started."

and people are going to say they are regressing as a team, but I really disagree. I see tons of better things on defense all the time. There's lots to like moving forward, the scores notwithstanding.

there are problems, yes. there is a GLARING problem on one side of the ball. there are players that won't be on the team next year, and there are players that won't be in the NFL next year.

but all of the criticisms are about a team that has vastly overperformed, and that's why we're upset. for a moment we had a winning record, and we allowed ourselves to imagine sneaking into the playoffs.

im not gonna say what i thikn the team's biggest problem is, because there's enough threads on that topic. but just put all this into perspective. there's a ton of good stuff going on here.

I'm upset for the very reason I said I would be at the beginning of the season. Teddy Bridgewater is good enough to win us 5 to 6 games and get us out of position to draft an actual franchise quarterback.

Exactly this. The only source of my ire is Bridgewater. I’m mad that I and a few others were right. And watching him play is even more annoying than I expected. We’re actually worse than I anticipated. I expected to get 6-8 wins, but I chalk that up to CMC being injured all year. Teddy isn’t even accurate or a good decision maker as advertised. Expected him to be good in the short game but just can’t throw a deep ball. This “bad in the short game, atrocious in the long game” that we’re seeing is worse than I expected.

The board is in a conundrum because it wants to lose and then gets pissy about losing

I’m full on tank commander. But I am still gonna get bummed out about awful individual play. Teddy is awful. Losing with style points is important for a new regime. The losing is expected. But are you Patricia bad or McDermott bad? One shows glimpses of ineptitude, one shows glimpses of promise.

The premise that 5 or 6 wins removes you from the opportunity to draft a franchise qb is not supported by historical evidence. The premise that it is entirely possible to draft a franchise qb in that range is very supported by historical evidence.  IMO at this point with this franchise the more pertinent consideration will be the quality of the oline protecting any newly drafted qb. My premise is this will have much greater impact on said qb's success than whether such qb is drafted in the top five or top 15.
