The hiring of Matt Rhule by the Carolina Panthers seemed to have upset a good portion of the fanbase and after a 5-11 season, there is doubt from that portion as to whether or not he is the guy to get the organization turned around.

We've mentioned many times before on here that Rhule has the blueprint to succeed in rebuilds. He did it at Temple and Baylor who were both in far worse situations when he took over than Carolina was in. It took him a couple of years to establish the culture and winning attitude but he was able to do so and turn those two schools into championship-caliber programs.

Rhule is someone that many people around the league believe will be great in the NFL because of how smart, passionate, and determined he is. If you haven't been watching the practices being run by Rhule and his staff at the Reese's Senior Bowl, you need to tune in. There may be only one or two guys participating at the Senior Bowl that will land with the Panthers but he is coaching these guys up as if they were his own players. That's something that these players will appreciate and will be something that will stick in their minds when their rookie contracts run out four years from now. 

Below is a clip of Rhule chewing out the team as a whole during Wednesday's practice. If his passion for the game doesn't excite you, I'm not sure what will.

This is exactly why guys want to play for Matt Rhule. Most coaches are just out there doing their job to get paid. Rhule is out here coaching these kids up hard because it's what he loves to do and he wants to make these guys better so that they can go on to have a successful NFL career.

 

Not only does being at the Senior Bowl help the Panthers' coaching staff help evaluate talent for this year's draft but it will help them establish relationships with many players. They're getting a taste for how Rhule and his staff coach and in turn, Rhule's staff gets a good feel for which guys they would love to have down the line if they are unable to select them in the draft.

I've been a huge fan of the Rhule hire since day 1 and I think for the most part he impressed in his first season, though not without some struggles. We'll see how far he can take us, I'm not going to try to claim he has a shot at a dynasty even with Watson, but I do feel confident he can bring us our first Lombardi at least, even if it takes 5+ years before we get to that level... One thing I've learned in watching sports is that things can change fast. I mean, who realistically thought Jim Harbaugh would be out of the league after 3 straight NFC Championship Game appearances and a close Super Bowl loss? Definitely excited, but we still have a long way to go with Rhule.

What I appreciate is that he wants real football. Not just a solid player on one end to fill a back of roster or on the opposite end, some all talent that's not really in it.  He wants focused football from his players centered on constant improvement. It sounds cheesy when you type it out but when it's executed correctly, that's how you create a damn good team.

I'm lean towards being all in on Rhule.  He's got the right genes to coach in the NFL and do it very well.  We're on a good path.

I had the perception he was going to be this over-positive preachy type but he's a f*cking ball breaker.

Upset? No. There were concerns and on the coaching side, he proved those baseless thoughtout the year. Now we are watching his controll during the offseason but concerns and things to watch sure is not upset. 

Now I was upset Hunrey was here contaminating things. But that had noting to do with Rhule.

I don't think it's fair to say a portion of the fan base was upset.  I think it's fair to say a portion of the fan base was dubious.  And that's probably a valid sentiment given his experience at the time, and the staff he put together.

In hindsight, I think it worked out well.  There were some bumps in the road and lessons learned, but you can't avoid those.  That's how you become experienced, working through those things.

Matt Rhule has a chance to be a great coach.  That much he has demonstrated.  We won't know for a few years yet whether he reaches that potential.

I like Rhule. He seems to connect with his players. Ron did too. The difference I see between Rhule and Ron is that Rhule seems willing to learn from his mistakes, accept them, and learn from them where Ron and Hurney would double down on their mistakes with bandaid approaches instead of being willing to say, "Well, damn... we fuged up. How do we actually FIX that instead of doing our best to put lipstick in this pig?"

Agreed. I wasn't sure about Rhule, mainly due to not knowing that much about him. After watching him turn chicken poo into chicken salad over and over again this season with Teddy at QB and a bunch of rookies + JAGS on defense, he has won me over. His adjustments when things are not going well is the anti-Ron.

Resisting changes that would actually incentivize good performance and not seniority based systems. What a bunch of donkeys. Hope the replacements straight up take their jobs and never give them back. Sick of watching refs script games with no repercussions.

      Donovan seems like highest risk to me. Lloyd and May have already established relationships with all these kids. There’s probably guys hitting the portal that they recruited from HS. And then there’s the possibility of transferring their own guys from their current teams. They’ve also been recruiting the HS kids for like the next 5 years already. Look at the Iowa coach who hit the ground running by transferring all his guys from his D2 program. Or going across sports to Cignetti transferring all his JMU guys year one then building off that to a national title year 2. Donovan is starting from square one having been in the NBA so long and he’s already 60. So you’re potentially punting year 1 for a guy you are just hoping to be a 10 year hire while you figure out how to actually develop your next home grown 20yr guy. That’s 1/10th of the time you have him, more or less at best. The hope would be that he would find some high level assistants who have been working the college recruiting trails already, but then are you giving up his ideal staff just to get a foothold in recruiting and transfers. Think Belichick year one was bad? Imagine how much worse it would be without Steve Belichicks transfer portal pulls. Hoping Mays or Lloyd are all they’re cracked up to be.
