Phil Snow: “I’m not happy with anything really. Winning five games is not what we came here to do. Being between 18th and 22nd in a lot of defensive categories is not the goal that I have for this defense. I think we have a long ways to go.”

AG: Are you happy with at least some of the improvement made? Things seemed to be moving in the right direction.

PS: “Well, I mean, we did get better, but until we get to the level that we’re going to be at, I’m not happy about anything.”

AG: Cornerback is one of the positions of need on the defensive side. What are you looking for in a corner?

PS: “The first thing is they’ve got to be able to run. If they can’t, then it limits what you can and can’t do. So that’s a priority. They have to have quickness. You have to be sudden, somebody moves really quick you say, ‘oh wow,’ you can recognize it. Those are things that good corners have.

“And then, along with those two, you’d like a real competitive guy. Because if you’re not competitive at corner, you just get eaten alive, because it’s a hard position. You’re not going to win all the time. So, if you can get a guy that has the speed, the movement skills, which is the quickness, the change in direction and then they’re competitive, then you have a chance to have pretty good football player. Now, along with that, you’d also like good ball skills.”

AG: That sounds pretty hard to find, someone with all of those skills.

PS: “Well they’re hard to find. You know where they’re playing? They’re playing on offense at wide receiver.

“ ... When I was in college coaching, I also tried to convince the tailback to play safety and the receiver to play corner, because of the skills they have. If you look at all the great DBs, and you go back in their history, a lot of them were really good offensive skill guys in football, played basketball, all the movement stuff they’re really good at and good hand-eye coordination. That’s what we’re looking for.

“Now, as you get longer people, if a guy is bigger, then he’s probably not at times, maybe not as quick, but he gets away with it because of arm length and size. You have to be smart, based on size and speed, and then you try to put it together and hopefully you picked the right one and he becomes a hell of a corner.”

Are you trying to say our defense UNDER achieved this year?

Our defense went from 31st in 2019 to 18th in 2020 in terms of points surrendered.  Our overall talent level decreased monumentally with the loss of James Bradberry and Luke Kuechly, and yet our results improved.

Phil Snow deserves a damn medal for that alone, all the while he was being doubted across the media and fan base alike.

Look, he may yet hit his ceiling.  He may not be the guy in the long run.  But he began a turnaround for us.  He definitely deserves our support, and a chance to build on that.

I was very concerned about Snow but he greatly exceeded expectations. Seems some people are forgetting that virtually everyone expected us to have the worst D in the league and we we're far from that. Snow's D was basically the opposite of Teddy at QB. When the chips were down in key late game situations they came up with stops the majority of the time... then Teddy shat the bed.

The Panthers were 31st in team spending on defense. The defensive performance for 2020 was offset by all the new draft picks, so we moved closer to the middle of the pack stats wise. The Panthers defense did what one would expect given the roster, or you could argue they did a little better. Unfortunately 2020 was not a season of surprises as the Panthers team as a whole did almost exactly what we were expecting given the roster. We didn't overachieve, and we didn't underachieve. We hit the target for what most were anticipating, which was a losing season near the bottom on the league, but not rock bottom. I said that going into the season. We did just that. My point is that our talent level on the roster is what really matters. Grandpa Snow is not going to take a roster like we had in 2020 and coach them into a top defense. No chance of that.

Moving forward we should improve on stats on defense due to last season's rookie wave improving, and new picks and better free agents rolling into town.

      He’s set financially for life barring complete fiscal lunacy. He has $12.3 million guaranteed. Think about that. Twelve million three hundred thousand dollars, he’ll be 28 years old when his contract is up and he’s completely forgotten about if he never plays another down in the NFL if he so chooses. Say after taxes he ‘only’ brings home $6M (fire your accountant territory) and parks $4M in a run of the mill mutual fund… good God… What I’m getting at, IF homie ain’t feeling the NFL, he has 12,300,000 reasons to take the fewest NFL edition ass kickings as possible while waiting out his very wealthy non-football future.  Obviously completely talking out of my a$$ with this… but if you hated contact, didn’t want to live with a completely wrecked body for the rest of your life and you know you’re set financially… what path would you take, assuming you’re cool with being a quitter (not calling him a quitter, I’m just playing out a scenario)? Why do so many first rounders bust? Where was he before his one year wonder if he was such a stud?  Everybody likes the dude on a personal level. How could you not? …. but I like seeing a winning product even more. He doesn’t play like his head is in the game. The Why is where the speculation lies and helps to clarify if his issues are ‘fixable’ or not.

      Very likely that he needs another season or two to really find his groove.  It very well may not be here where he has his best season. He’s a physical standout, but he can’t seem to get his focus and mentality right. That non-catch where he didn’t get his second foot in bounds was a truly awful display of this. Every professional in this game makes that catch.  Last week, it was clear that he wasn’t playing in top gear.  Like so many young people these days, he wants success without working hard.  He wants maximum reward for minimum effort. He wants to rest on talent. But talent alone won’t cut it.  The foolishness of youth and inexperience.  He can have it all if he wants it.  Seems like he’s content to be a social media star and a forgettable football player.
