Good Observer article on Teddy and other QB stuff

He [Teddy] was brought in partly because in a reduced offseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a brand new coaching staff, his familiarity with offensive coordinator Joe Brady from the 2018 season with the New Orleans Saints was viewed as an upside, as Rhule alluded to. But he was also someone the coaching staff advocated for signing thinking he’d be a good fit for the team.

Cornerbacks coach Evan Cooper, formerly the recruiting coordinator at Baylor under Rhule and whom the head coach values the opinion of, mentioned Bridgewaer before the coaching staff even made the transition to the NFL.

“(Evan Cooper) was the one that always talked about Teddy, like, ‘Hey if you ever go to NFL, this is who we should get,’ just knowing him and his football character and his character,” Rhule said this fall. “Then we saw him at the Sugar Bowl while he was practicing (with the Saints). I had a chance to visit with him and talk to him a little bit.”

Once hired in Charlotte, Rhule and his staff put together tapes of what they were looking for in players to match their schemes. When it came to the quarterback position, a variety of examples of Bridgewater were used to illustrate what the offensive staff was looking for.

“A lot of clips were Teddy in terms of pocket movement and different things that Joe (was looking for). So that kind of translated into ‘Hey, this guy would be a great fit for the system, the guy would be a great fit for us,’ ” Rhule said. “When the time came, we made a run at him.”

Hurney was the only general manager in attendance at Justin Herbert’s Pro Day at Oregon just before things shut down. Herbert was eventually picked one spot above the Panthers at No. 6 by the Los Angeles Chargers and named Offensive Rookie of the Year.

“We spent a lot of time studying (Herbert) with thoughts of maybe drafting him, right? So we put a lot of time into him last year, so we studied him a lot,” defensive coordinator Phil Snow said in September.

To help get on the same page, the Panthers’ coaching staff and scouts have met over the past week or so with Fitterer, who has said the team will be “in on every deal.”

Teddy was also brought in because of the uncertainty with Cam and his health. Covid prevented us from seeing Cam up close when they needed to know if he was healthy. If they did, I have a feeling that might have rolled with him for last year without an extension.

Teddy was a good risk. Last year, he didn't have a O-line and CMC but more then that, Teddy hasn't played a full season in years. With no training camp to really get in football shape, I think he wore out towards the end. If he's our QB next year (draft pick or not), I can see a better Teddy with a better O-line and a healthy CMC and a better defense to get off the field on 3rd down.

Teddy was and, barring a miracle, will continue to be exactly who he's always been - sometimes good enough to win, not good enough to be above average (or even average really) without perfection around him. He showed nothing at any point this year to the contrary and the actions at the end of the year, from both him (throwing the staff under the bus) and the team, could indicate the off-field element was underwhelming as well.

Why did she leave out the part about Marty Hurney holding the entire coaching staff and front office at gunpoint until they signed TB to a contract? It’s been widely reported(lol) that it was Hurney, and only Hurney who wanted TB. Yet, once again, a team reporter makes no reference to it in a very specific article on that exact subject.

Still losing sleep over that eh?

Good read.
The story is pretty consistent with what has been already reported. The current coaching group wanted Teddy.   As much is I would wish that it was true, this was not Hurney going rogue.

Most of our coaches have very little NFL experience and hopefully they will quickly learn that this is not college ball. Signing Teddy set this franchise back...not necessarily because of his play...which was below average...but because of the contract.

    • Love the Freeling pick even more after watching his pressers. Dude is sharp and definitely seems to have the right mentality. I loved hearing how personal he took having a bad game with a torn labrum and instead of seeing that as the reason for his bad game and not changing anything, it motivated him to work even harder. Such a great pick, we finally got our all pro level LT for the next decade and now we can move Ickey to RT or guard with no hurt feelings due to his injury. Second favorite pick is probably Brazzell. He said he false started on his 40 and it cost him probably 0.04 seconds, so he’s more of a 4.33 guy rather than 4.37. Really Randy Moss lite. I didn’t know anything about him prior to drafting him and first highlight reel I saw of him I immediately thought he looked like Moss. Then I saw the measurables and was like yep. Then I see that he’s drawn that comparison by many scouts and analysts. If he can add consistency and play to the level of his highlights every play then we got an incredible value.
    • During his three years at UGA he only allowed 5 sacks. He is only 21 and is on an upward trajectory. He's a great athlete that was good basketball player in high-school.  His height (76% how is this only 76%???? these guys are giants now), hands (81%), span (99%), speed (96%), quickness (10 yd. 86%), and explosiveness (vert. 96%, broad 97%) are all outstanding.  When we took Freeling, Fano, Mauioga, Proctor, and Miller were all off the board so we could have drafted Iheanachor or Lomu instead or waited to the second or third round to take Bell, Tiernan or Barber or wait even longer.  A lot of these tackles (including the first two taken) project to right tackle or guard in the NFL and that's not what we needed now.  Freeling has some sloppiness to clean up in his run blocking, but he's young and getting better.  We can let him get experience behind Walker and Moton knowing if he has to replace one of the two this year, his pass blocking won't get Bryce killed. Icky's not coming back from that injury as a nfl starting left tackle and Moton is in the twilight of his career.  If Walker has a great year, we will have to pay him a lot and if he is medicore we would want to let him walk.  Getting a LT on a rookie contract is going to help a lot with the cap.
    • It was cool but they have done this at least in recent years unless I am imagining it
