Was the Gettleman's 2017 draft class the best in Panthers history?

Now that the 2017 draft class is up for contract extensions, I think it's a good time to appreciate what an amazing draft class this was. Every single player drafted is still in the NFL 4 seasons later, and 3 of the players are some of the best players at their position in the NFL. 

Can anyone name a better Panthers draft class? 2001 maybe? (Dan Morgan, Kris Jenkins, Steve Smith)??

1 (8) - RB Christian McCaffrey. One of the best and most versatile RB's in the game. Turned in an all-time great performance in 2019. Hoping he gets back on track in 2021 after an injury riddled 2020 season.

2 (40) - WR Curtis Samuel. Early in his career he dealt with injuries and inconsistency, and it was thought he might be a bust. Samuel really turned it on in 2019 and 2020 and become a reliable 3rd down target. He will get big money this offseason.

2 (64) - OT Taylor Moton. One the best RT's in the game right now. Panthers slowly developed him and would be absolutely brain damaged not to sign him to a long term deal. 

3 (77) - DE Daeshon Hall. Worst pick of the draft this year. Didn't work out with the Panthers, but he has bounced around the NFL and was mildly productive for the Eagles. Still on the 49ers roster as of now.

5 (152) - CB Corn Elder. Another pick that looked like a bust early on that turned into a decent player under Matt Rhule. Elder was one of the Panthers most consistent players in the secondary in 2020. He might be brought back in 2021, otherwise I'm sure he'll find a role on another team.

6 (192) - FB Alex Armah. Still on the roster in 2020, in a league in which many teams don't have a FB anymore, Armah carved out a role for himself and might be back in 2021.

7 (233) - K Harrison Butker. Butker is one of the best kickers in the NFL. The one that got away.

 

Honestly, I look back on this draft and wonder if firing Dave Gettleman was one of the worst decisions in franchise history. Richardson brought back Marty Hurney who flat out couldn't draft as well after Round 1. The team slowly fell apart and almost no one from 2017, players or management, is still with the team. What a massive f*ck up Jerry! I'm glad you're gone forever.

Here's hoping Scott Fitterer can draft as well as Gettleman did, especially in the later rounds.

He whiffed on Daniel Jones which was his biggest mistake. Gettleman probably fell in love with him while he was at Charlotte Latin. Maybe his kids went there too I dunno.

I was mad when they fired him. He was let go cause Richardson sided with Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen. They both wanted big money and gettleman was opposed to it. Once they got their new contracts the both subsequently essentially missed the next 3 seasons

He’s starting to build a little momentum in New York. But at the end of the day that franchises immediate future hinges on Daniel Jones. 
 

All in all I prefer having rhule at the helm

2001 is the best in Franchise history and I dont think its that close. Those first 3 picks, one of them a Hall of Famer are legendary. If CMC plays another 8-10 years i think there could be an argument but right now its still 2001

Hell, even 2011, only because of Cam (and every other pick failing miserably) has to be considered for what it meant to the team. Considering half this board would trade every single one of those players for Watson the value of a true elite franchise QB can't be understated.

Dave Gettleman was a far better GM than most Panthers fans are willing to give him credit for.

I'm glad that we have someone else, but cutting DG and replacing him with Marty set us back 3 or 4 years.

Sorry. Don't care how good the player is. A draft that only nets you one player is a sh-tty draft.

If you're looking for the best draft the Panthers have had, it's probably between this one and Seifert's last draft in 2001.

Too soon to call 2020, but I'm very optimistic. I think 3 years are required to make an informed decision, but I'm also the guy that looks online for a week before booking a flight.

      TMac to finish up Feels good after pads came on. Physicality is a little different, playstyle is a little different. Refs let the players play, so he has to earn his stripes to get calls and just has to be better playing through contact. Focusing on staying confident and listening to coaches. Not much has changed for him, still trying to be his authentic self. Was asked about boxing practice he was seen doing. He's done that since he was a kid because his dad was a boxer and taught his siblings. Was the youngest and got beat up the most, but now he's the fourth of sixth children. Boxing helps with his cardio and being reactive with his hands to the ball + DB. Admits to struggling the first couple of days, hats off to the DB corps for making him better every single day but had his best day on Wednesday. Even the best get got. Just have to remain confident in preparation and abilities. Confidence will take you only so far, and that's where his resilience plays a factor. XL is authentic and great to have in the room. Can rely on him to be the same guy every day. They make each other better. Everybody feeds off of each other and when one person wins they all win. Happy to be a part of the receiver room. Was asked about how he was laughing harder than everybody else at XL getting his feet in the water off the back of the boat: "Man he needs to be stopped bro... He can't be serious but he was serious. It's all good." Playing against the increased amount of press he's facing in practice is helping him get more physical. His job is to catch the ball, so if it touches his hand he has to come down with it. Only catches with one hand if he needs to, but that gives the QB a bigger catch radius. Had a pregame routine where he did a 360 one-handed catch, but doesn't do it anymore. Working on being a pro: Getting into the facility early and getting treatment, eating better, etc. Just wants to win re: rookie goals. Anything he can do to help the team win. "I'm looking for to the season man and keep pounding."

      DJ Wonnum up next Felt the defense came out ready to work at all levels and took over practice. New standard around here. Young guys have to know they're coming in to work. Last year was not the standard. Nic and Princely are fun. Different personalities but loves what they bring to the room. Sky is the limit for them. Nic sits next to Wonnum, Princeley sits next to Jones II. Allows them to be better mentors. Feels great and ready to go Incoom's athleticism allows him to bend and get low even to compensate for not being the biggest guy. Can set the edge. EDGE guys are helped when the ILBs can get home because it allows them to be a little more free while still in scheme. DB being back means his dominance is back. Can set the edge from the 3 or wherever he's at to make the runs bounce to the EDGE guys. Winning mentality and standard this year. Championship level from practice to how you live off of the field. Accept greatness and excellence with guys wanting to come to work every day. Not settling for anything less. Been in guys' shoes that are fighting for roster spots so he knows how to address them. Remembers not knowing what's next, especially as a rookie. Have a clear mind and ask the older guys a lot of questions. Has a good relationship already with Pat Jones II due to knowing each other and talking football all of the time. Can make hand gestures and know immediately what to adjust. Taking care of his body and excited to start the season. Getting it acclimated to football again by being able to tackle and bring players to the ground. Didn't know they were playing live tomorrow. Don't tell me it'll be "thud." Browns next week will allow them to hit somebody else and get a feel of what a different team is doing. Also allows the team to see where they're at on offense and defense. Ready to play football. Not worried about the QB matchup for Cleveland, going to play hard regardless of who is back there.
