14 million in guaranteed money to two guys who have battled injuries and have been largely disappointments...

The more things change the more they seem to stay the same around here

You have to replace the depth we lost, neither Miller, or Schofield had high merits and played well, as bad as people here mock the OL they finished middle of the pack last season even with all of the injuries.

We don't have the cap to sign a top tier FA on the OL, the price is too high, so the thing both these guys add is the fact they can both plug and play anywhere on the OL.

Elfein - G or C

Erving - T, G, and C

These are value signings, and allow us to BPA in the draft is needed in case an OL prospect we like is not there.

Elflein - backup center, will compete for either guard position, if doesn't win...decent backup for all 3 spots.

Erving - played center in college, could compete for either guard position, could compete for the T position opposite of Moton.  Decent backup for all 5 positions in the OL if loses out on any starting battles

Versatile signings.  Helps us in taking BPA in the draft.

Feels like this and the Elfin move are to basically build versatility into our offensive line. Elfin, while mediocre, can fill in at either guard spot or center. Erving can fill in any spot on the line.

They may not be pro bowlers but it beats rolling with ufa every year at guard and hoping Paradis plays well.

Seriously.

These two are no better than Reed and Miller who we signed for a fraction of the cost.

Miller - $3,970,000 was what he earned in 2020 (Erving comp)

Schofiled - $1,500,000 ''  '' (Elfein comp)

These signing are on par when you look at guaranteed money / length. 2M guaranteed per for Elfien a former 3rd rounder, and 8M over TBD as the details are pending on Erving a former 1st round selection by CLE.

Considering coach Rhule has OL coaching chops at the NFL level, I'm willing to see this play out.

Reed wasn't even an FA signing during the traditional period, so naturally he'd make less.

The contracts aren't necessarily bad but I don't see why you'd target depth offensive linemen on the first day of negotiations since you could end up getting them at a cheaper price if you just waited a little longer. They definitely seem to be going for versatility among the offensive line though, which is good to see.

It's only the beginning of rebuilding the line.  There will be draft picks and udfa thrown in the mix as well.  Patience Padawan.

Don’t want to miss out on lineman and then be stuck rolling with 3 undrafted rookie starters and 5 undrafted rookie backups.

    • I really appreciate Bill explaining his methodology here because that gives interested parties a chance to try and recreate the results themselves. I believe that it's safe to assume that despite emphasis being placed on WRs that Chuba Hubbard is one of the Panthers' top-5 weapons. Considering targets, yardage, receptions, etc... Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette are also on the list. Jalen Coker's success might have snuck him in there as well. I can't draw a conclusion on who #5 is though. I've narrowed it down to Diontae Johnson, David Moore, Ja'Tavion Sanders, and possibly Rico Dowdle if they're taking into account his production for the Cowboys in 2024.
    • Unfortunately business is business especially when there are large sums of money on the table. Goes the same for player and ownership. Does not make it right either way.  Why would he not want to play for the niners? Closer to home with a team that has a chance of delivering a SB trophy.
    • I don’t know if it’s him bad mouthing his former situation in public or my pettiness but either way I’m not a fan. Dude was on playoff teams getting paid millions to entertain. I’m not better that because and I am better than that. You don’t bad mouth your former employer in public. Esp after getting over paid and two, poor little Russian baby didn’t get the playing spot he wanted. Rod had him exactly where is was supposed to be.  He had a mean lip check and did defend our players. Specifically the devils game around Christmas where is our Haula on his ass. Cool. Thank you. But don’t talk poo about us. Because it make you look like Haula.    “need to get as far away as possible”. fug off. Didn’t see Burnsy bad mouthing and his play dropped off too.    sorry, but Orlov doesn’t get a pass from me. See you twice a year…
