Peter King: Panthers want to come out of this draft with more picks than the seven it currently holds

8. CAROLINA. The Panthers are in an intriguing spot. Smart money says one of the five quarterbacks will still be on the board at eight, so new Panthers GM Scott Fitterer could be in the luxurious position of having three options: Picking the quarterback and giving him a comfy redshirt year behind Sam Darnold, or trading to a team desperate for, say, Justin Fields here, or taking a very solid player to continue the Carolina rebuild.

One thing I do know (and not just because Matt Rhule just spent a learning day with Jimmy Johnson, who always had a trove of picks to work with) is Carolina wants to come out of this draft with more picks than the seven it currently holds. The average team has 8.1 picks in an NFL draft, including Compensatory Picks. Over the last eight drafts, Carolina has averaged 6.3 picks per year. Knowing Rhule and Fitterer, that’s got to burn them. Particularly after trading three picks for Darnold, look for them to work to gain more April 29-May 1

Anyone outside the Panthers organization that claims to know what the team intends to do is delusional.  Those within the organization likely won't be able to say for sure until the moment of truth arrives.

I am not sure they are to that level of state secret. I suspect they are as tight lipped as most NFL front offices are around draft time.

Of course the Panthers are doing their due diligence, but there are at least 7 teams in front of them at the moment.  Stand by for further developments.

Yeah, as fans we rarely know what goes on behind the war room doors. Even if we stand pat at 8, we'll likely never know about most of the deals that were offered or that we tried to make.

I think we’ll find out how good Fitt is at working under extreme pressure because any potential trade is going to be a quick decision based on what just happened in front of them and who went off the board.

This is probably more of an educated guess than fact.  Fitterer when he was with Seattle traded down numerous times for more picks.  

It just depends on who is where when #8 gets to us.

Wouldn't all teams love to trade down, gather more picks and still get their "guy?"  If someone makes a good enough offer, say moving to the teens and picking up a couple more picks, I imagine the Panthers will strongly entertain that offer.  

The NFL is a QB driven league, and if one or more of the top QBs start to fall, I can bet that people will be calling anyone from the Bengals to the Panthers to shake the tree.

Instead we pissed away a 3rd and 4th/5th comp picks and a chance to draft top 3. If we were at 3 and not enamored with Fields/Lance, we would have gotten the haul from SF. NFL teams don’t manage their roster like they‘re playing Madden. Move on and get over it.

Speaking of Sewell, he’s one of a number of players I’d see in play for the Panthers at No. 8. The genius of the Sam Darnold trade, by GM Scott Fitterer and coach Matt Rhule, is that it maintains the team’s flexibility to take a quarterback there while creating new flexibility not to take a quarterback with the pick. If Fields slides to No. 8, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his slide stop there—be it via the Panthers taking him or trading the pick to someone who would. At the same time, Carolina’s in a nice spot to address its needs at corner (with a Jaycee Horn or Patrick Surtain) or tackle (with, perhaps, Sewell) and go forward with Darnold, too.
