I think him being off the team is a good thing but the timing, just getting a 6th and the cap it is messed up.  Why not wait until the draft, why not wait to see if a qb went down.  Seems like we jumped on the first offer and we didnt save poo

I think you are vastly underestimating the situation. This is absolutely a scenario that you jump on the first offer (not even saying this was it). We save 5mil+ this season and get a 6th round pick. How is that a bad deal? Majority of us here would have been happy if we traded him for nothing in return

A 6th is poo especially since they are not taking all of it on.  Again, why not wait if this was the best deal and we are still going to have to pay for him?  Saving 5 million isnt poo this year.  Its not the difference between playoff or not.  And now we still need a backup.  I just dont understand the timing if this is the deal

If you look at it like we traded Teddy, a 2nd, a 4th, and $7M for Darnold and $6M in cap - a 23 year old former #3 pick that many say have a potentially very high ceiling - it does not seem like a bad trade.

Valid.

Honestly though, I just look at it as a bad quarterback being gone and us getting something back for him is borderline miraculous.

We dont need the cap space this year.

1. it'll roll into next year's cap.

2. We're still going to be shopping FA's that get cut. A lot of teams can't sign their draft pick right now.

3. We have several players that we need to be working out long term deals with. That starts in earnest next week.

If we do in fact take a QB at 8 his value goes to like zero.  Everyone would know at that point he is being released.

Decent move as we basically traded Teddy, a 2nd and 4th for Darnold.

Signing him was horrible from the very beginning. I think literally everyone on here can agree with that. I see a lot of folks pooing this move, but given the situation we walked in to, I think it was probably the best we could have done.

I, for one, couldn’t be happier he’s gone, and am very excited to see what Darnold or Fields can do with our young stud coaches.

    • Oh yeah the QB is huge in this stuff. Imagine what Smitty could have done with a surgeon back there. And some more offensive minded head coaches. It was always run heavy. He was one of the best I ever saw and people didn’t know who he was outside of Carolina, for the longest time.
    • For sure, any college scout that touted Bryce Young as worth the first overall pick, needs to be gone. I don’t think the college scouts are so much the issue, I think it is the minds of the decision makers that have the most influence.  If this draft produces, and Morgan was really in charge, maybe Tepper will develop some respect and stay back and let people work.
    • I just am not aware of regimens that offer increased velocity which is the biggest weakness I can see in Young (that needs addressing right now). Is it possible to do? Who has done it that we can see as an example? I guess I am saying before I believe weights will give him added zip on the ball, I would want proof that it works.    I think weight room would help him not be pulled down by two fingers, even if they are big strong DL fingers. They are still fingers controlling 185 lbs. So that needs to be addressed but it is a secondary issue behind his footwork and ball velocity. It might help too, in allowing him to retain some velocity while not putting 100% effort into throws. Which should help his ‘deep’ ball.  I agree they can’t fix his footwork on those pistol or gun snaps where he slowly goes backwards and does the tippy toe thing.  Maybe putting him under center and taking the option of that type of drop away from him, forcing him into the classic under center style. Drop and plant and throw. Maybe that would help get around it.
