Yeah, this staff seems to not really differentiate.

Same thing with Fox and Rivera and a lot of teams. Even ones that do differentiate between the two will cross-train and prepare the two.

Responsibilities all boil down to about the same during the game anyways depending on the offensive attack. Cover center field and watch the run. Both guys need to be good in coverage and both need to be stout against the run.

Emergence of the spread offense has pushed safety in this direction even moreso.

Drafting Horn makes Chinn that much better in the back of the defense.

the secondary just evolved with the addition Horn + Chinn playing his natural position.

the defense will have 4 blue chip pieces. Brown, Burns, Chinn, Horn

you can def start to see the picture Rhule is painting now with what he had and what he’s building.

I don't think they've specified that Chinn would be a strong safety.

I know Person said a while back that they were planning on trying Chinn at free safety.

FS doesn't make sense at all. LB/S hybrids usually play SS. You want him closer to the front 7 to be able to lay the wood and cover the TE underneath. Having him back peddle away, which will lessen his chances of doing that, doesn't seem like the right move.

I wouldn't worry about FS vs. SS. there's not a whole lot of difference between the two jobs and abilities anymore. Just think safety. Both guys back there will largely do the same job.

Sure it makes sense. With big tall receivers who are tough to bring down you need a safety who is big, tall and fast as well. I hope he can be our version of Ed Reed in the secondary.

For those who say Jackson is too small to play nickel slot, the two top ranked slot defenders by PFF were Kenny Moore who is  5'9" and 190 lbs. and Bryce Callahan is 5'9" and 188. Compare that with Jackson who is 5'10" and 180. He is surely big enough and fast enough. And if he isn't a good tackler I would rather have him miss a tackle closer to the line where he might have help rather than putting him on an island as an outside corner or at free safety where he is our last line of defense. The only reasonable place you play him if you start him at all is at nickel slot.

Don't get too caught up in the delineation between FS and SS. Quite often there's very little difference between the two. It's essentially a meaningless designation. Responsibilities will be the same for both safeties.

IMO, if you want the ability to disguise your D, you need both your safeties to be versatile. So yeah, FS,SS, it doesn't matter.

First of all YGM, one of your 3-4 DEs got swallowed up at RDE in the 4-3 front. Second, what the heck does that run have to do with you trying to have a 3-4 front with Burns and YGM as the DEs?

If Burns and YGM are 3-4 DEs, our opponents won’t ever pass the ball. They will run all day on us and that video does nothing other than to prove that YGM needs work against the run as a 4-3 DE which is not the same as a 3-4 DE.

nvm

    • Great point.    I would lke to add that there is another QB on the roster who was terrible over the middle--Kenny Pickett.
    • I don't think this is the year for Carolina, unfortunately.  I think they will have to make a decision on the QB position-all we know is that Bryce has year 5, but a long term deal has not been signed--yet--and they would be smart to take a "wait and see" approach.  I have not kept up, and I see a path to upside for Bryce, but I do not think we have aggressively pursued a QB when our QB was mediocre to worse than mediocre.  yes, his numbers are improving--but he has adapted by eliminating what he does poorly and not improving on what he does poorly.  Just my take and I have no data to support this view.   Basically, we go as Bryce goes, so the approach is not to bring in a QB to have him compete until we find one, but it is to make Bryce as good as he can be--is that good enough? Season ticket holders buy the hope of winning rings, not winning 8 games. Last year, Bryce had a resurgence.  Take away TMac and Rico Dowdle.  How good was he?  I still have hope.  Not a hater of plan A, but a hater because we have no plan B.
    • Yeah man, I've been here for a very very long time. Couldn't even begin to tell you what year. Maybe 2004 or 5? I've never really been super active, just enjoy reading everyone's opinions and discussions. I'll chime in from time to time. I have had a few different accounts over the years. It's always been a fun place for me to check in on my favorite team. Hopefully we can keep the place running for a long while still. I also would like to recommend bringing back the Lovely Ladies page!
