Offseason post: Rivera literally told the media he wasn't changing anything before Superbowl 50

To Ron and Co's defense, why would they change anything then?  We had steamrolled thru the entire league all year, and dominated both of our playoff games.  That team was one of the most ass-kicking teams on both sides of the ball that I have ever seen.  Now, in hindsight its easy to say they should have done this, and should have done that, but at that time, there was no need to change anything as we had kicked the poo out of everybody we played all season.  I think the expectation was that Cam and company would continue to shine in that game - we just ran into an all-time great defense with an all time great plan, and the refs did us no favors all game long.

Read my other post in this thread for the answer.

We didn't lose that Superbowl because of Ron.

It was his team. He didn't adjust. Team wasn't ready. When things went sideways he didn't adjust nor did he help get the teams head back in the game.

Lots of things working against us, including the refs, but what Ron could have managed and controlled better, he didn't.

They didn't look like themselves all game

They looked ok out of the gate, but refs knocked the wind out of us (it was a catch) and we struggled to breathe the rest of the game.

We needed a reset. We needed a leader to get us right mentally. We couldn't depend on Cam because he had his own battle to fight trying to dodge defensive players taking late and dirty hits without consequence. They needed a HC to help them get things right. It wouldn't have taken much, but the job was too much for him.

You're welcome to your take.

I watched the game, so I don't have to rely on someone else's opinion.

That game was winnable with the staff we had, and players we had.

While the refs were bad in that game, they're bad in every game.  No reason to mention them. I certainly didn't.

We left a lot out on the field that day.

I rewatched the game recently, because I am a masochist. We really had plenty of opportunities to score and win.
But it seems like every time we crossed the 50 someone screwed up. We had several potential scoring drives ruined by turnovers and also, as good as our defense was, we missed some easy interceptions and also the offense couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers we got.
It was a classic bye-week Ron game. Team just didn’t look prepared at all.

We had just went 15-1 and dismantled the Cardinals why change anything

Sounds like another brilliant coaching decision made by Rivera's predecessor.

Even if you have confidence in your strategy, you plan for failure and you adapt.

Rivera &co. didn't. They rarely ever did. And when they did, it wasn't by choice and they were never truly committed to it.

When it mattered, Rivera always reverted back to his original tendencies. Riverboat Ron was an illusion. Paddleboat Ron was the reality.

Game to game, In-game, and half time adjustments are required as part of football...  You have to have a scheme that facilitates adjustments.  Playing football with out any sort of contingency plan is well...not smart.

Ron gumped his way to the SB on the back of Cam Newton....along with the rest of us.

We needed S.Smith that game so bad.. His attitude alone would have changed some things.. Everyone was to laid back and when there CB grab our WR face mask at the 1 and tried to hurt him agent 89 would have ripped his head off and fired up everyone..

Ron continues to screw this franchise. From SB 50, winning against the Saints 2nd team, and the fuging debacle that was the WAS game last year. I would actually be worried to face him and the WFT in the playoffs. One way or another, he has our #

Ron does not even have his own #. He has to go in his phone to find it.

I felt our team, (the players) were high on themselves. It show in their energy level that they came out with. Almost like they felt they could win just by showing up.

I still believe there was no way in hell we would have won that game. We picked a crappy year to go to the Super Bowl in the same season Manning was retiring. You know NFL wouldn’t let their boy lose a super bowl right before retirement.

    • That's going to account for about a baker's dozen nationwide. He isn't bringing Taylor Swift numbers nor, sadly, are those shows bringing many female viewers in general. Substantially less than regular games will. I am not pining for any sort of publicity that isn't from the field, good or bad. Tepper has definitely cured me of any of those notions.
    • I think we are very far away from that, unfortunately. I also think our roster is far worse than most realize. It's largely unproven or underperforming young players or veteran journeymen. Our core is the smallest it has been in probably 15 or more years. The truth is, our talent pool has been shrinking rapidly since Ron left. This is the result of Gettleman's poor drafting in his latter years, Hurney's poor overall drafting and then the absolutely disasterous Rhule/Fitterer era. All the while, the deep talent pool we had was either retiring or leaving.  I mean, what drafted talent do we have that would even start on a third of the NFL teams? Just basically Brown and Moton. Horn really doesn't count because, well....he is never healthy enough to start anyway.  That's fuging terrible. If not the worst in the NFL, very close to it.
