DJ Moore: a few vertical concept/contested catch highlights

DJ has improved in terms of route running. He’s not there yet, but I see improvements from yr one. Where he shines on tape: competing for contested balls, particularly on nine routes. He’s also a tenacious player with the ball in his hands after the catch. He doesn’t have Steve Smith‘s personality, and he’s miles away from earning those credentials, but I do see some of 89’s traits when I study his game.

Steve was more refined as an intermediate route runner, particularly after a few years. It’s just something you keep working on.

Another trait I see in DJ that reminds me of 89: how he attacks after catching the smoke/quick screen. Sometimes, it’s more of a bubble, but he seeks contact, and can be a bowling ball in the open field.

This is tremendous production, given the lack of consistency at quarterback, changing regimes, coordinators, the lack of continuity on the OL, prohibiting time for vertical opportunities.

He’s just a humble guy who competes his ass off. Here’s a video of some of his more competitive moments.

What does a break out season look like when he's already been  1200 x2?   1300? 1400?  That would be top 5.

He had more yards than Mike Evans and Amari Cooper, in fewer games.  He had more yards than Brandin Cooks or Corey Davis.    He did that with TB and PJ throwing to him.

I think for the people who have a problem with DJ, his quiet humble nature combined with his on the field fierceness (especially with the ball in his hands after the catch) actually works against him.

we have a giant void of vocal leadership on that side of the ball since Cams absence. I don’t think DJ is ever going to be that “this is my team” kind of guy which some people will probably never get over.

I hope with some level of consistency at QB, especially in the vertical game, he can at least have the on the field TD production that will solidify his status, at least in the minds his detractors, his importance to the team.

Route running was one of my main concerns when he was drafted. His route tree seemed small and he was not as nuanced in it.

Seeing his improvement since then is eye-opening and pleasant, especially with the carousel this team has underwent at QB.

Good post and good stuff. Hoping to see Moore continue his progress for the better!

a breakout season for moore would be double digit touchdowns to go with his yards.

yards are great but TDs fill out the resume
