Post Jets Game - Biggest areas of concern

Coaching and coaching. Defensive calls were the best of the bunch but I’m guessing the move to conservative zone in the second half almost fuged us.

Matt Rhule had some serious head scratchers and seemed lost at times.

Joe Brady and Blackburn were fuging horrendous today. It’s like nothing changed with them from last season / may have seen some regression. Very alarming.

Oh the other big glaring thing is even though after he settled down Darnold looked good, but he was throwing to the primary/first read on every play. Even the check downs to CMC were scripted. When he has to start going through the progression or is facing a good secondary he really needs to stop staring down his first read.

That isn't what it looked like live. On one play where he had lots of time I saw him go through his progressions twice and then dumped it off for a short gain. There were lots of plays where it was designed to get one person loose and you expect to throw it there to that guy when he breaks open like to did with DJ and McCaffrey over the middle. Let's be honest, with a security blanket like CMC it is easy to overuse him. As Sam said in an interview after the game, Christian knows how to get open and get himself in a great spot to catch the ball.  He is always open. Hard to resist.

A few times he did go through the progression but I did catch him staring down his guy a lot more than he should have. Maybe it was just the product of a new team and a very opposing secondary leaving guys open. We will see next week.

I did not see Darnold stare down his first read every play.  He also definitely went through progressions on any play he had time to, but in the 2nd half especially he had almost no time.

Let's call out our deficiencies without using "we barely beat the worst team in the NFL" as your argument. The truth is, we don't know who are the worst teams or whether the Jets are firmly in that conversation.  They've got almost a brand new team and have a new coaching staff. Houston has been considered the consensus worst team in the league and they blew out the Jaguars. The Eagles were another of the consensus bottom 5 teams and they had the most dominant win of the day against the Falcons (who many predicted would be better than the Panthers). The Packers are probably the 2nd favorite team in the NFC to make the super bowl and are getting manhandled by the Saints. The NFL is impossible to predict. Hell the Panthers were the most predictable team in the league in week 1. Overreliance on McCaffrey, a talented young defense, conservative playcalling that collapses in the redzone. Not much surprising today. But happy for a win regardless.

We're doing the same things we did under Ron Rivera. Barely beat a terrible rebuilding team. Get a little lead and then go into a soft zone. Red Zone issues. Rely too heavily on CMC. This is just Ron 2.0. if this is it then we shouldn't have fired Ron to start with. We've just got a faster talking more nervous Ron Rivera.

I don't know if anyone noticed this or not but Heartsfield left the game in the early part of the 3rd quarter.  When he left the game the Jets had something like 80 yards of offense in the game.  Our defense was mixing coverages on almost ever play.  After he left we put Chandler in at safety and Chinn moved to nickle.  The Jets scored 14 points and had almost 200 yards of offense.  We played exclusively zone after Heartsfield left.  If he can't play next week this defense becomes much more predictable.  Just saying.

Yep I noticed that as well. Hartsfield played surprisingly well and Chandler seemed to have a hard time filling in.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
