Ian Thomas vs Tommy Tremble

Take a look at this play right here by Ian Thomas bottom right of the screen.. 

Thomas gets tossed like a rag doll by 47 who ends up making the tackle on CMC. 

 

Isn't this why we drafted Tommy Tremble?

It is the reason why we drafted Tremble. I think we were trying to disguise the play based on the personnel. Tremble pretty much tips our hat that it will be a run play. I saw this a couple times yesterday. I also saw that we would sub 3-4 players every single play.

That is pretty bad.  Ian did make a few plays yesterday but he is mostly a pass catcher.  Yeah, blocking is more Trembles thing

I still say we cut Thomas and save the $2M. He's the same dude as Colin Thompson and Thompson is much cheaper.  The last time I checked, we aren't running 3 TE sets.  Move Ricci back to TE and, for crying out loud, bring in a TRUE FB.

I don't even care if Tremble tips our hat. Everyone in the world knew the ball was going to CMC for half the snaps yesterday and CMC was still productive. Give this man some blocking!

And Arnold is worse at blocking than Ian. If tremble can become a pass catching tight end with his blocking ability we’ll have a lot of options. He’s just a rookie though who had hands issues in college. We’ll see. We need a guy who can do both to not tip what we’re doing to the defense.

Um guys, they were in 'I" formation which tips the play is a run no matter who the players at FB and TE are.  It could have been play action, but not much of that yesterday either.  Oh yeah, that not wanting to put too much on film thing.

To be fair that's a TE trying to block a defensive end in an obvious run formation I doubt many TE's in the league will win that type of 1 on 1.

What's even worse, is that Erving chipped #47 at the beginning for a combo block, before getting to the 2nd level.
This means Thomas' effort and intensity was really really next to 0.
FWIW, Huff is listed at 255 lbs

Thomas is 260 lbs, Huff 255 lbs.

And that wasn't a 1 on 1 block

I wasn't impressed with Arnald. He's soft. We really should figure out who we like more. Thomas or Arnald and let Tremble play.

I know we're all down on Thomas lately but he actually had a mostly pretty good game. Was solid in the receiving game on very few looks (and was wide open in the end zone when Darnold missed him) and did have some other nice plays as a blocker. Tremble was also good as a blocker. Arnold didn't show much but, again very few looks. Clearly Brady doesn't utilize TEs in the passing game much. I'm fine with rotating these 3 guys like we did yesterday, none of them are great at this point but as a whole I don't think the position is a massive weakness or anything. No reason to get rid of Thomas.

Thomas has to be able to make that block or he shouldn't be on the team.
