Noticed this a lot in pre-season and across Weeks 1 & 2, I know we've all heard the 4-3 Under talk, but I've been seeing odd fronts regularly from the defense, and I LOVE IT!

With buys like -- Burns / Haynes / Reddick / Luvu able to stand and move, drop, and rush it's been nice to see what we've been able to do when you pair that with -- Brown / Jones / Fox / Gross-Matos / Roy Nixon on the DL

Below is our pre-season, starting defense versus PIT in game #3

Left to Right

DL - Brown / Jones / Fox

EDEGE / OLB - Burns / Reddick

ILB - Thompson / Carter Jr

Secondary - Horn / Jackson

Safety - Chinn / Burris

Below from the 2nd quarter versus NO, this actually looks to be a sub package for Nickel (3-3-5 alignment) another Odd front variant

In this one looks to be from left to right...

DL - Nixon / Jones / Fox

EDGE / OLB - Reddick / Burns

MLB - Shaq

Secondary - Horn / Jackson / Melvin

Safeties - Chinn / Burris

It's nice to see the athleticism, and versatility we are starting to employ after years of the heavy zone, and static alignments under Rivera.

Anyone else notice this, what are your thoughts?

I've liked Phil from the jump. He has prototypical grizzled football guy written all over him.

I have to admit I thought Snow was some kind of weird Rhule charity case from his bio... But man, that's why Rhule is in charge of a football team and I'm on CarolinaHuddle from my couch.

Snow has surprised so many ways.  If he keeps this defense flying around the field it'll be one of the best we've ever fielded.

He's the kind of guy that you want to sit down with and listen to him discuss football over a beer or 12.  Imagine the stories he could tell.

Some of the most successful defenses in the last decade didn't seem to truly have a base.

Take for instance the Seahawks and Legion of Boom. Lots and lots of pass rusher types and no real true 3-4 or 4-3. That defense also had lots of versatile players that didn't limit the defense.

Rivera's D the last few years he was here was a very standard looking 4-3 without much of anything different.

Every pre-season, there'd be a few posters suggesting we change to a 3-4 front, but they'd always be shouted down by the irrefutable logic that we DIDN'T HAVE THE PLAYERS TO DO THAT.

Now all this "versatility" emphasis has changed all that nonsense.  Remember the "amoeba" fronts some DCs employed?

We've now gotten ourselves an "octopus" defense.

We ran a 3-4 in Rivera's last year, and it was mostly a disaster.

      Oh it's nothing elite, but we played without Horn last year.  Gilly playing at 80% is better than any CB2 we have had in a moment.  Luvu was fun, but he was out of position in Evero's defense.  Jewell is a tackling machine and has had over 100 in 3 of his last 4 with his highest being at Denver with Evero.  Pass Rushing and CBs are strong red flags but they also were last year.  On paper it's the same or maybe slightly better than last year and Evero had them keeping us in some games.  Hell our 2 wins were due to the defense and the kicking game.

      I mean best case scenario is horn plays 15ish games, brown and clowney replicate last years stats, we sign gilmore and he reverts back to form after his injury but even then we still lack pass rush and our linebackers are dogshit.  And thats best case.  If horn goes down and if clowney starts showing his age then it could get ugly.  We are going to miss the tenacity of luvu.

      Well you have year 2 of the new scheme so several players should be more comfortable.   Vs last year DL we added Robinson to play DE giving Brown a solid presence on the other side, plus he is familiar with Evero (I don't like Shy at NT but he was there last year too)  LB- Clowney and Wonnum are more complete/probably better than Burns and YGM, Jewell and Shaq are better than Luvu and whatever random guy from the streets we had playing last and again Jewell is familiar with Evero CB- This is a big red flag but vs last year we kept Hill at slot, we lost Henderson and replaced him with Jackson which seems like a wash to me.  If we can sign Gilly I will consider this upgraded but as of now it's a weakness and a wash Safety- Fuller replaces Bell as an upgrade who is also familiar with Evero.  I think we signed another vet in Scott as depth   Depth is still an issue no doubt but it looks slightly better on paper than last year IMO...
