The Panthers….. not an attractive destination for top shelf talent?

Why would Brady go to the Bucs if this was a reason not to sign? Winston was the 3rd most sacked QB in the league. The line was terrible. Enter Brady…all of a sudden the line is one of the best in the league. Great QBs elevate everyone. Plenty of free agents and trade targets to patch those holes. 
 

Carolina is an attractive destination for 3 reasons. 
 

#1 - QBs like playing in good weather. CAR has that for most of the season.

#2 - QBs always want a top D to fall back on if the offense isn’t humming. CAR defense should be a top 5 unit for years. 

#3 - All players want to play for an aggressive GM and a wealthy owner. It means they’ll get paid and the supporting cast will get paid as well.

While there are many, many reasons a player wouldn't want to play for this team, Charlotte might not be one of them. These are very rich men. They can afford their real home in the city they prefer, and a smaller condo in the city itself during the season.

Players want as much money they can get and to win a championship.  That's it.  If the panthers offer that opportunity, they will come here.

On the flip side California has a huge income tax but offers a market in which players can earn extra through sponsorship. It’s basically anyone not in a big market or Florida that is left out in the cold.

The state income tax is an advantage but only for half the NFL season for FL players as they pay state income tax when they are on "away" games in the states they play in.

 

That's why Toronto/Vancouver struggled so badly to get top talent in the past being in Canada, if you think US taxes are bad, go north a bit

This narrative regarding free agents and the Panthers is as tiresome, oversimplified, and misrepresented as the political ones that pollute the air waves during election seasons.

This is Fitterer's first year as Carolina's GM, Rhule's second year as the coach, and Tepper's third year as the owner. The fact that there has been instability at the three major positions of power for the football team makes it very difficult for sensible fans to not make sweeping generalizations about their combined competence. This means that trying to figure out their influence on the situation is... well... pointless.

With that being the case, let's go back a little bit. Seeing as how this is brought up yearly, we can assume it's been going on for a long, long time. In 2011, we get a new coach and draft a new QB. Why would a top shelf free agent want to come to the worst team from the previous season? Combine this with the fact that Hurney was so bad with money that he twice maneuvered the team into salary cap Hell, and now we see that we're missing two of the primary motivators for a player: Ws and dollars.

Gettleman's era was literally, from start to finish, an exercise in getting the team out of the cap hell that Hurney put it into. There was no money. As soon as the books were cleaned up, they brought Hurney back. What did he do with the now available money? Signed Dontari Poe (2018), Eric Reid (2018), Gerald McCoy (2019), Bruce Irvin (2019), and Matt Paradis (2021). How good was the 2019 defense? Historically bad. How good has Matt Paradis been? About as solid as Matt Kalil was.

Like... I get it. Most folks don't care how the sausage is made, so long as it's palatable to them. I just wish they didn't have to start making up bullshit.

I understand your intention, but the Panthers and the Carolinas area they represent are not "small market". The more times that passionate fans continue to repeat this incorrect perception, the more that perception become actual reality with the casual crowd and sports writers.
