No Team has won the Super Bowl in 20+ years with their QB taking up more than 12.6% of the salary cap

This is one of the biggest reasons I am so against the Watson trade. We would not only be depleted of our draft assets, but a huge chunk of our cap would be allocated to one player with limited means of filling out the roster with talent via the draft or FA. 

Watson's Cap hit % next season = 19.4%

That's without Darnold's dumbass contract tacked onto that. So in total we would be allocating 28.4% of our entire team's Cap to the QB position...

This is HORRIBLE Roster management. I don't think the people that want Watson comprehend just how bad this deal will be for this franchise moving forward, specifically next season alone. 

Tack on a completely depleted defense and we are in roughly the same situation the Texans were in two years ago after the Laremy Tunsil trade. 

The team's best course of action is to take the hit this season, suck for a year, Fire Rhule, and hit the reset button with our likely top 5 pick in 2023. 

We are far more likely to win a SB with a QB on a rookie deal than we ever will be with Watson based on the numbers alone.

Probably should add some context in there. Like the fact that QB market has changed multiple times in the past few years. Cam Newton was the highest paid QB in history when he got his 20m/year deal from us 8ish years ago. Aaron Rodgers just set the market at 50m/year which isn't that bad. DeShaun's contract looks like a steal for a legitimate top three QB.

 

Also you should consider the fact that the cap went up 30m & is projected to keep increasing.

 

Would you really rather keep Burns an extra year for him to flip to Atlanta next year? Or have Chinn become an All-Pro for a three win team having Darnold or Carson Strong at the helm? 

 

At some point we have to put the chips forward and go all-in. We are a franchise that has had some highs but ultimately have never had the consistency to win back to back winning seasons --- EVER. 

 

Our team has no culture or identity or even sustained success. We have an owner with money to play with and doesn't mind spending it because he wants to WIN. 

 

I support Rhule and Tepper and Fitterer 100% in changing the dynamic of this franchise. And you should too. No other examples from this franchise should be valid - because we do not have a Super Bowl

Bro, do you not know how percentages work? 

The 12.6% number is consistent year in and out over the past 20+ years regardless of the cap.

Thank you for posting this. It should be pretty obvious though. If you have a cap at approximately $200 million to pay 53 players on the game day roster pay, you can't let one guy take up to 20-25% of the roster and expect to be balanced on both sides of the ball.

It should be easier to win a SB title as a QB matures. NFL economics actually make it harder. These days we actually see post ( TV pundits) say you gotta build a team while your frsh out of college QB is on his rookie deal. Crazy.

If the owners hard balled the agents and union in the next bargaining session by saying we aren't paying any QB above a certain percentage of the cap, I'd actually be on their side... as long as the cap was increasing at a believable rate over time.

      I was definitely on board with re-signing Darnold for another year while they drafted someone. Darnold really turned a corner once he came back in the second half of 2022. He is one of the better QBs in the NFL now for sure. Still makes those patented Darnold blunders though, evidenced by throwing a pick on a potential game winning drive yesterday. But he was also stellar at times during that game too.

      I dare you to go “pull the records” on my Cam posts. 🤣🤣🤣  Kyle Allen posts too.  I was one of the few screaming how garbage he was early.  Also, look up the posts and see what side I was on when it was rumored Olsen tried to console Cam his rookie year after a tough loss.  And whose side I was on when people criticized Cam for the towel, or “pouting” or for dancing.  I have never wavered.  Not only do I pull for Cam as an athlete, but I felt a kinship with him dating back to his Florida days.  I wrote about it here.  I know what it’s like to be judged off your persona, your reputation that someone else has given you, off falsehoods, off appearances, off of a mistake.  I know what it’s like to be ridiculed and omitted from opportunities for those things.  I’ve never me Cam, but that’s my brother.  So, anything insinuating anything else is hilarious.  I was riding for Cam when half the board wanted Marcel Dareus.🤣  I was riding for Cam and running off racists like “TheRealDeal” over Matt Moore (who, actually was a damn good QB, imo, but he was no Cam).  To this day, I still maintain, if we signed Cam off the street right now, he is the best QB on this roster instantly.  I don’t care what anyone says.   So if you have some sort of previous history with another poster or posters that made the racial component obvious, then please share, but when it’s coming from me?  Trust and believe - this ain’t that.  Never will be.  And no doubt, a ton of Cam hate was purely racial.  But, I call a spade a spade.  Mentioning Bryce in the same breath as Cam is objectively insulting.
