Fitterer best draft day trader per PFF

Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire gives us a PFF perspective on the effectiveness of Scott Fitterer's draft day trades, and so far Fritter has done an outstanding job (albeit in only one draft sample).

“Fitterer benefits from only having one draft in the sample, but it was a strong draft from a trade perspective,” PFF’s Conor McQuiston writes of the Carolina shot-caller. “He only traded up once and lost an inconsequential amount of value that he later made up in a terrific trade down with Houston. While it is unlikely he will trade this well every year, it is an encouraging sign nonetheless for Panthers fans.”

Honestly, though it's only one draft, in that one draft he traded about as much as some have in total since 2017. It just may be harbinger of good things to come. It's a good thing considering the way he got "jobbed" in the Darnold trade. He had to make up for it. Now I'd like to believe he's learned from that mistake. It's a long offseason, but not doing anything stupid for Garropolo or Mayfield thus far is a good start. If we can get ahead of the pack as opposed to having to dig out of a hole at the start of the race, then we can make better strides.

I realize that some of you are skeptical of our overall moves last draft, but I believe that with time and proper development and management of personnel, you'll see that the Panthers GM is better than you think. image.thumb.png.7352cceb50dfe6aa79b35bcb3021d5d9.png

Points are great, but players are better.

I liked it last year, but I think we missed out on some real good players, at key positions of need by trading back.  Then again, maybe we didn't and Fitt had those players graded differently.

Either way, I'm hoping for a good one this season.

P.S. please don't trade back on 6 if a franchise LT is sitting there...I know we don't have a 2 or 3, but please don't do that.

Get ready for the trade down imo. Neal, Ekwonu, Cross, Penning, Raimann are all ranked in the top 25. If one or none are gone by the time we pick I fully expect a trade down into the teens if it is possible to pick up a 2nd.

I agree we need that cornerstone LT but unless we’re finding a way to trade for an immediate winner at QB we are gonna need more picks too.

Seattle is where he learned, guess who is #2? I only wish Fitterer could get a competent coach instead of Tepper’s pride getting in the way. I believe he will be a good GM for us, if given the opportunity to succeed.

Yea that’s crazy #2 with 19 dam trades that’s a better evaluation based the amount of successful trades.

I feel like this as well, let’s trade down and target someone like Penning who may be the equivalent of any of the top three. Because we have to add some draft capital and a Qb it seems. I’m ok with a Coral or Howell in the second I’d rather a young non broken inexperienced QB then what we know doesn’t work.

I am not sure this is the thread, but since trade down was mentioned, I am entitled.  I am going to unfold several layers here---so stay with me:

Based on circumstantial (perhaps meaningless) information garnered by watching the Fitterer Presserer, Fitterer mentioned that the Panthers tried to take Corral out to eat in Mississippi.  He did not mention Pickett, and we know the Steelers took Willis out to dinner; he did not mention Willis either.  We also know that Chris Simms rated Corral as his #1 QB, so it is possible that some experts like him.  Since Corral was injured in his bowl game and did not participate in the combine, he is way under the radar.  If the fact that the Panthers inquired about going out to dinner with Corral, is that to suggest that someone who picks before #6 also asked him? Ok, then does it suggest that our interest in Corral goes deeper than a "passing fancy" (that pun was awesome).  I think the desire to take him to dinner suggests a serious look, and then I bring in the fact that the Panthers feel that there is (at least one) guy in the draft at QB that "checks all the boxes."

Is that guy Corral?  If so, does that mean they think they can trade back five spots or so and add a second rounder--and still grab their QB?  Is that what Fitterer, the draft day trade guru, is hoping to do?

Hmmm.  If Willis goes off the board by the time the Panthers pick, that would leave 2 QBs Pickett and Corral there at #6 (it is possible all three are there, making the trade back more lucrative), could we trade back and still get our QB?

Discuss.

    • My father played Defensive End at Ohio State so naturally my kid is a huge Ohio State fan to go along with his being a huge Gamecock fan due to my ties to the school but last year he swore up and down we needed to draft Stroud number 1. I don't know if it was just being an Ohio State homer or what but he kept watching video after video of highlights and said Stroud was the future for us.  This past season he now claims we should have taken Rattler with one of our later round pics due to him saying he will be one of the huge steals of the draft and will be NFL ready within one season if it takes that. He said if Bryce busts completely we would have a future top QB to turn the team over to with Rattler taken in the fifth. From his prediction last year I'm starting to believe maybe they should hire him as a consultant for a few bucks a week. Hell, he is 13. They could pay him $50 a week for consulting and he would would think he is rich!
    • Yeah we know he is short blah blah blah. I don't have a ton of faith in Young to be the guy or the future but damn that joke is older than the why the chicken crossed the road.
