Chinn to stay at safety...

Only thing I'm unsure of with Chinn at safety is his instincts when the ball is in the air.  Obviously, his time at LB as a rookie proved he definitely knows what he's doing when it's on the ground...  but, the thing is, his abilities and tools are so elite, I feel like you have to give him every shot in the world to play safety.  His athleticism and range are cream of the crop level, its just a matter of whether he has the instincts to do it in the secondary, because we know he can at LB.  I still think he's mote of a SS, in the mold of a Kam Chancellor-type guy, but again, if he can demonstrate the instincts against the pass, with his physical tools and size, he would be the prototypical, ideal FS.  I'm fine with this approach.

The reason Chinn didn't look good at safety is because he was out of position or taking false steps on too many plays. Chinn needs more time the position before we see him at his best. Chinn doesn't pick things up quickly, and at LB he admitted that he was guessing as to what to do on some plays.

And he looked amazing doing it. 'Guessing' coming from a player that young is another word for natural instinct, and they neutered his play by putting him at safety in the role he was in. They wasted one year hoping he gets that magic in another position and are probably wasting more upcoming. Just dumb.

Maybe he shifts back to something more like the Joker role he was in his rookie year and gets back to excelling. At the moment though his talent appears to be somewhat wasted.

Chinn is naturally a strong safety who should play in the box most plays like Kam Chancellor so this makes a lot of sense. He is not a coverage FS like Earl Thomas so as long as we don’t play him in that role like we did last year then I’m happy. He could play LB sure but he fits better at SS.

But the major question is does our coaching staff have the brains to figure that out? I mean Rhule leads this poo show and one guaranteed thing he has proven is that  he fell short with the brains situation. Hell I saw chunky beer guzzling chicken wing eating huddlers saying things all season that Rhule needed to do yet he refused and then at seasons end admitted the EXACT things he should have done that the pie eating contest crowd on here had been saying he needed to do. How the hell did that man get a job so higky esteemed and so highly paid when he is just so bad at his job in the first place?

I mean, to be fair, they played him in the correct role his rookie year.  I don't think it is a matter of them not figuring it out, so much as they felt like he truly was the best option as our deep cover safety last year. And they were probably right.  We did have a top 10 pass defense after all.

It feels like last year they played him more in a traditional zone safety role more out of necessity than anything else.

    • I can't defend Richardsons failure to this point. And he is still as young as the rookies being taken this past season. I think he still could pan out.  XL is another case. I think he looked the part but some of his times and film showed he struggled separating and the fact he never showed up being good before his 5th season. Laad was my obvious choice at that point(tho I was banging the table to trade up and grab Thomas Jr when he fell into the 20s). Ladd didn't lack athleticism and had the route running and mental part to boot. Didn't see a weakness in his game expect he was smaller..
    • Surprised?  I wouldn't be surprised. I think you are missing my point. I'm not saying the Panthers won't extend Bryce.  I'm just saying that decision won't be based off one game.  This game is not going to decide if Bryce is released or given a 5-year deal.  Like, those are crazy extremes. The people who will be surprised are those who think the Panthers losing this week will automatically mean Bryce is gone in the offseason or won't be starting again for us next year, since that seems to be the only reason people are wanting them to lose.  Which is why I think it is silly to be rooting for that.  Because we can all pretend we know what the FO is thinking, but we don't.  So why not just enjoy the moment and the possibility of hosting a playoff game?  Like, what's the point of being a fan of the team if we can't even enjoy moments like this?  Just because of something that MIGHT happen in the offseason?
