Round 6 Pick 189: Amaré Barno, EDGE, Virginia Tech

Panthers selected Virginia Tech EDGE Amare Barno with the No. 189 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Barno (6’5/246) wasn’t even rated by the major recruiting services out of high school, but it might have been for the best as he excelled at the JUCO level before signing with Virginia Tech. He took a redshirt before receiving Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition in 2020, leading the team with 16.0 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Barno started all 12 games in 2021, but his production slipped to 5.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks despite an appreciable jump in pressure rate, going from eight percent in 2020 to 11.5 percent last year. His straight-line speed is among the best of all time at the position, running an incredible 4.36 40, while his 37-inch vertical is 93rd percentile and his 10-foot-11 broad jump is one of the top marks in history for an edge defender. However, the Achilles heel for Barno is his play strength. His spindly frame leads to him getting overpowered at the point of attack, and he lacks the counter ability or technique to dislodge from blocks. A fast and long-limbed edge defender with elite speed, Barno will need to make some changes to stick at the next level, but his special teams acumen could help him stick around

Was hoping he was going to be the pick. Obviously not ready to play yet but just another athletic freak that has tools you can work with. At this point in the draft that’s all you can ask for.

I particularly like Fitterer’s idea of searching for home runs in the later rounds. Sure there are some guys out there that are more polished and will develop into average NFL players, but you can get those same type of guys as UDFA’s. Fitterer is swinging for the fences and trying to land stars in the late rounds… I’m about it.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
