"Best bets" article puts Panthers under 5.5 wins

From Vic Tafur in The Athletic...

Panthers Under 5.5 (+115)

The Panthers improved their offensive line. Too bad Sam Darnold is still the QB. There is still some question as to whether Matt Rhule knows what he is doing, which is not ideal in Year 3. They have a shot thanks to their friendly schedule, but if they don’t split their first four games against the Browns, Giants, Saints and Cardinals, or sweep the Falcons, they are in big, big trouble.

NFL win totals, over/unders and best bets for all 32 teams

So this guy isn't expecting the team to make any progress during the season, which is totally fair considering we actually regressed. Interesting both years we had early 3 game winning streaks and then got figured out/nearly got shut out.

Over. We have a much improved Oline and CMC is likely to make it past 7 games this year. Our schedule might be a tad more difficult (impossible to tell at this point) but we get ATL x 2 again.

I counter your giddy optimism with...

I have yet to see someone take a schedule and put the actual 8 wins out there though.  It would then require the Panthers pulling some big upsets IMO after basically running the table on all the close ones.

Eight? We are talking six wins to cover.

I think I read the post wrong.  You said make it past 7 games.  I read that as wins intitially.  That's where my mind got 8. You meant CMC.

But yeah, I'd take the over if forced with 6.  I can't get much higher.

    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
    • Because this DL is completely reliant on Brown being available and being a stud. Without him we were the worst D in history. The Wharton signing last year reeked of desperation. He just isn't a great fit for us schematically and I think we panicked a little bit when we missed out on Milton Williams who would have been a great fit.
