Quarterback Battle?

  1. 1. What do you want?

    • Completely open QB competition. Best player starts (even if its Darnold)
    • Its Bakers job to lose.

Why though? Baker is better than all of them. Matt might one day be lightyears better ... but right now he's not ... at all. Sam and PJ aren't even close to Baker's level (which isn't that high sadly).

Then Baker should win the competition hands down. Everyone deserved the chance to compete and if Datbold is the best in camp then he should start. McAdoo wont be looking at last year at all. It is all about the now.

I don't believe in handing anything to anyone who hasn't performed for us.

No matter how badly PJ and Sam may have performed they have earned the right to fight for their job.

Sam and Baker have been auditioning every time they've stepped on the field.  They are not going to look at camp alone.  They are going to consider previous play and in that, Baker has the head start.  If Baker has not recovered and stinks up camp, then Sam could take it.  I don't see that happening.

Yeah but if he is obviously better than it should show immediately. What is the risk of a competition?

Because all they have to look at would be practice. Practice doesn’t always translate into actual game performances, especially with Darnold. If Baker has a lingering injury or is way rusty that’s one thing, but starting a QB who has proven he can’t start because he looks good in practice doesn’t make sense to me…

I think this this is such an interesting situation. You have a head coach that knows that his job depends on his QB. So he absolutely needs to make sure he fields the best person.. not the most popular one.

Baker has the better stats. Darnold has arguably more talent. With your job on the line, it will be interesting to see the choice.

If I had to tier/rank the QBs in terms of best option come week 1.

Contra Cheat God Mode QB: PJ Walker.  You can't die.  You can't lose.

Average/Competent NFL QB: Baker

Rookie/Developmental QB: Corral

Drunk Jimmy Clausen on Steriods: Sam Darnold

Clausen numbers

Darnold after week 4:

55.4 completion percentage

TD-INT  4-10

If Corral outplays them in practice that’s different than Sam IMO. Corral hasn’t proven he can’t start like Sam has and he will only get better (in theory) as the season progresses. So basically I’m ok with a competition between Corral and Mayfield, just not Sam because we already know what he is and it’s not good…

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
