From Justin Mason (@Masonjt24): Matt Rhule out as Panthers head coach if the Panthers don’t make playoffs? #KeepPounding

Justin, obviously, Matt Rhule would have a hard time, like any NFL coach, surviving three straight playoff-less seasons. But there are two reasons to think David Tepper might remain patient. One is what’ll be left on Rhule’s seven-year, $63 million deal at the end of the year. Two is that this was a very big swing for Tepper, and it’s pretty clear he doesn’t like to be wrong.

So yeah, in all likelihood, the playoffs will be the barometer. But if the team’s up and down early and catches fire late but just misses the playoffs, based on how invested the franchise has been in Rhule, I could see there being a path to him surviving it.

In all seriousness, there's almost nothing he can do to get fired this season or next. Record doesn't matter.

Breer thinks it's at least possible, but I know the comments about Tepper "not wanting to be wrong" aren't something anybody wants to hear.

Tepper does know that even if you, personally, do not admit you are wrong everybody else knows. You can lie to yourself all day long, but we all know whats up.  This is assuming we have another terrible year....which I am not so sure is going to happen.  Maybe im being a homer, but I really do think they are going to turn things around this year and at least battle for a playoff spot.  This is not a team bereft of talent.

Rhule should be gone.  But Tepper is stubborn and made a bad deal, so he might stay

I would not be surprised if any improvement is used as the reason to retain Rhule. Yeah, we went 7-10 but that's improvement and we expect to be in the playoffs next year with Matt Corral next up on our neverending QB carousel.

I think it depends on what happens.

If we stay healthy and go 2-15, Rhule will be gone.  We will all celebrate.
If we go 7-10 after being decimated by injuries (Baker and Ikem go down for instance) Rhule will probably stay.

Sam's putrid play cost us 2-3 games last year.    If we had won 7 games, there might be fewer torches and pitchforks.

    • Hello pals and close impersonal friends, As we progress towards the draft, it seems to me that this off-season and the draft will be dedicated to providing Bryce with all the weapons he needs to be successful.   We all jumped to OL and WR, and rightly so.  However, do we have that game-changing RB and a TE threat that are good enough to qualify as "weapons?"  If we are truly going to give Bryce the weaponry he needs, can we say that we have done that with our current roster in the area of TE and RB? When I mock, I am focused on CB, WR, LB--and many mocks I do not have a RB or TE.  TE:  Last year, Dalton Kincaid, Sam LaPorta, and Luke Musgrave were successful in year 1.  A few others, such as Mayer, Washington, and Schoonmaker disappointed as rookies, but for the most part, first year TEs were successful.   In my view, there is one sure thing at TE in this draft and there is another who should be on the level of Kincaid and LaPorta--TE Sanders from Texas.   If we want to upgrade at TE, we need him, in my view.  Or we should probably start Tremble and hope that his improvement continues. Q: Is there a TE in this draft that will make us better?  Should we continue to bring along Tremble?  RB:  Chubba Hubbard had 900 yards last season, but he averaged a meager 3.8 yards.  Of course, with the new OL, that should improve. Sanders shows us what running behind an outstanding OL can do for your career.  He averaged 3.3 yards per carry and fumbled about once every 65 carries (2 fumbles, 129 carries).  However, before coming to Carolina, Sanders averaged 4.8 yards per carry.   His numbers should improve with the new OL.  Do we need a feature RB?  Do we need a bowling ball or a Swiss Army knife?  Can we assume that our RB production will improve with our $150m guards?  OVERARCHING QUESTION:  Is it reasonable to assume that the best "bang for the buck" (players likely to see extensive, meaningful playing time as starters or key rotational players) is to focus on TE, RB, and one more WR?    UNDERARCHING RHETORICAL QUESTION:  Has MHS lost his mind?
    • Yeah, that's what everyone thought back in the '08-'09 mortgage crisis housing crash. Fast forward 15 years and it's magnitudes worse. If it crashes those same capital ghouls are just gonna snatch up even more of the housing and have even more control over pricing.
