Panthers trade rumors

Trading Burns would be stupid.  He is like 24 and just starting to find his groove.  he will be a stud for the next decade.

Are we absolutely sure though that he’s not worth a couple first round picks and maybe a 2nd or 3rd to go along with it? I mean teams are practically willing to trade the type of draft capital normally seen for franchise QBs, I love Burns but he is no Julius Peppers nor is he a franchise QB

It seems pretty clear that opinions vary on if Burns is worth a top DE contract.

So I’ll ask this…

What former or current Panthers ended up worth top contracts after we paid them who weren’t unanimously supported as ‘worth it’ before paying them?

I don't even think the fans unanimously wanted us to re-sign Peppers in his prime.

I'd make a case for Charles Johnson. Granted he had Peppers on the other side early on, but he had 1 "break out" year before Panthers gave him that huge deal.

Nothing in the NFL is guaranteed. Injuries happen and draft picks bust.

IDK what Burns is asking for or where a new coaching crew would play him, edge hopefully, so it is way premature to pretend anyone here knows what's best beyond guessing. My hope is to ride out the year and make those decisions after other things are decided. Even if we trade him we can franchise him after his 5th year so there is plenty of room for a trade down the line if that is the route that becomes best.

I imagine there have been contract discussions or at least preliminary talks. A mega deal doesn't really excite me with where we are currently. He is a very good player but our general direction is in question leaving me thinking now is not the time to fug with the cap more in future years before we have a clear cleanup path set.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
