It's in all our best interest for him to be more than a wasted draft pick at a critical position. To rely on the next draft pick to be the quy without seeing what you have in the only qb you've drafted since Cam Newton is a serious waste of resources.  Something like that does not instill faith that the FO could draft and develop a qb even if they were handed one.

I don’t think anyone would argue with that.  I agree with everything you said.  It would be in the best interest of the org to see what they have.

Unfortunately, the league operates differently.  QBs don’t sit anymore.  Rookie salary cap incentivizes teams playing them right away.  Not to mention the public beating from media and fans alike, if they draft a QB in the top-3 and trot out last years 3rd instead.

Nobody liked it when we did it to Ickey.

Again, I think your way is probably better but the league has changed on us.

If his foot heals I still like the kid. That release is elite and I think the intangibles are there. He should get his fair shot for sure, hopefully the next coaching staff can develop him the right way, mainly throwing with sound feet and processing the defense. Its going to be him vs a Rookie vs a Vet so he has his work cutout for him.

Oh, Corral will get a shot at the roster. And, if he's half as good as some posters thought this preseason, he might even end up starter depending on other circumstances. I think it's more likely he ends up a backup for us, and we potentially carry 3 QBs if he has a decent preseason (I see our new coach drafting a QB).

That's fan driven mostly.  If you put a rookie out there before he's ready it is as bad as if not worse for an organization than not having him in the first place.  Not only did you waste the pick you've also set your team back trying to appease the fans and the media.

I see no day 1 starting qb's in this draft unfortunately.  I wish there were at least 3 but it is what it is. I just hope that whoever we take between him and Corral we get a good qb out of one of them.

I personally hate to see another useless vet brought in to hold the fort until we find out if our 2 draft picks are worth anything, especially Corral. But i know my opinion is mine alone and I'm sure one will be signed because I cannot have it both ways lol.

We are so qb poor that you all should hope that the kid is a capable backup at minimum.  Even if we draft a qb he will not be starting right away.

There's not a qb in this draft that should be a day 1 starter.  I'm also not on the sign a vet train ride just yet as that has worked out so well for us.

What I see as ultimately playing out is that we take one of the qb's in the 1st. It doesn't matter which one because neither will start right away.  That will be Corrals opportunity to make his case for the starting job.

It's in all our best interest for him to be more than a wasted draft pick at a critical position. I think they will sign a journeyman to be the temporary starter or backup.  Then they will probably roll with our new draft pick, the journeyman, and Corral.

The grand plan last year, after we traded for Mayfield, should have been Mayfield, then Darnold, then Corral in that order.  Perhaps you could sub Walker for Darnold, given who the HC was and eat the dead cap.  The idea being to work Corral into the #2 position at some point during the season and put him into a position to compete for #1 in 2023, if he is up to that.  If he isn't up to it, then you know what you need to draft in 2023, and you probably do, regardless, since the depth chart would be down to Corral at the end of the year.

But, that was overRhuled.  The Process didn't want Corral and did everything in his power to ignore "the freshman."

Looking ahead, who knows?  The odds are against him.  But it is not a sure thing that a new coach won't like him in a similar pecking order, with a temporary vet and the 2023 draft selection as #1 and 2 (in some order), and Corral as #3 with the plan to move up to #2 before the vet's contract expires.

The odds are Corral is yet another one screwed by The Process.

I believe in Corral too, but I don't believe in this organization's ability to develop talent just as much. It's sadly a wash IMHO

It not so much that we should believe in him but rather we should seriously see what if anything you have in him by giving him a real chance to compete. If they do not then that pick we gave up was a wasted pick.

Cortal is a real enigma right now.

Yes he looked bad, but so did a lot of people under Matt Rhule. And it's a small sample size either way.

I don't feel like we know enough about him to either abandon him or depend on him.

That's really exactly how I feel, and really how I wished most Huddlers felt, but if they did we wouldn't be having this highly inciteful--err, insightful discussion. 😉

It wasn't that we didn't like it when we did it to Ickey. It was the stupid camp competition. Either put him there or don't. But wasting time doing pointless battles doesn't help anyone when our oline had been a plug and play of rejects from other teams.

Like Growl says, if/when we draft a guy in the first he is going to be giving the reigns.

Well everyone should just STFU I guess now that the all mighty Growl has made this statement.

There isn't a single franchise QB in this draft and if we draft one he'll have to compete with Corral and whoever else is on this roster.  Just because he's the 1st round pick doesn't always make him "the Man".  T. Lance showed that this season.  He sat all last season and was supposed to be the man but he was abysmal before he got hurt.  SF lucked out that Jimmy G was still around.

No, IDGAF if you don't think Corral is our future. He's getting better, and he will be in the mix regardless of rather you like it or not. For those taking a definitive stance on Corral based largely on Rhule's ineptitude, you will eat crow. You will eat crow.

This is not a hard and fast rule.  Some players can start as a rookie and develop where others its probably clear they need a bit of bench time.  But on the whole if they can play they can play.   I dont think it hurt guys like cam, allen etc to take their lumps from day 1.
