I hear this but we are the 17th best defense in the NFL right now from a PPG standpoint. Last year we were 18th. We are 18th in interceptions this year, we are 30th in fumbles. This year we have Brown playing much better up the middle and Horn has played most of this season compared to last season. Burns is even better this year, too. And yet, we are a middle of the field defense. DJ Moore is significantly better than Mooney or Claypool and our offensive line absolutely destroys the O-line of the Bears. *IF* Fields were the pick and he developed through two years like he is trending now, with our weapons and much better o-line to protect him I don’t think the defense would be significantly worse and I think our offense would be significantly better.

Plus, all those drives he extends with his legs when needed would give our defense a rest from all the three an outs we’ve had the past five years.

If you want a spot to doubt this you can point to Matt Rhule having never developed offensive systems at any stop he’s been in and he has relied on Phil Snow at every level to make a good defense. So there is a chance maybe Fields would still suck here but he lived through Matt Nagy, into a new regime that didn’t put anything around him in year one, and things are still trending up for him.

Bottom line, our defense has great top end pieces. It’s time to get a top end QB. I can’t wait for the draft.

I'm not knocking fields at all and agree the value of a franchise QB is thru the roof. But I don't think our D rankings are indicative of Horns value. For instance, the Bears rankings on offense aren't great - from a PPG perspective they are 19th.  That isn't on him tho and he's shown a lot of great progress IMO, I'm just illustrating why those rankings to evaluate a player aren't really fair.

Agree that it's our time to get a franchise QB in the draft though

They are 19th with minimal talent and no blocking. And that’s after Trevor just put up 10 points. Fields last five starts has averaged 30 points a game. We haven’t had a stretch like that in years and I think he’s be better set up for success here with our line and DJ Moore.

Just curious…are we thinking it’s a coincidence that the D has played lights out these last couple games after Donte Jackson’s injury? Maybe too early to say, but worth keeping an eye on.

DJack was always overrated because of his speed. He should have been traded for a decent pick when they had the chance.

Middle of the road defense because the offense sucks and can't maintain drives. You're defense is never going to be good in terms of ppg when your offense is ass

I agree on the OL difference. Not sure how Fields develops here for the last couple years, though... Hard to be sure.

    • I don’t remember Mills from the USFL days just when he was in NO.  But when you saw Smitty it screamed oh yeah, this guy has something. Immediately. So, have not seen anything that dramatic with Young. All I know about him says he is solid with his character and smarts and don’t see a lot of that translating into screaming he really has something. I think the people that say he could possibly acceptably run an offense designed around him, with top flight talent in support, are probably about right. But I can’t see any Pro Bowls or lofty accomplishments in my crystal ball.
    • I thought I read they’d still be there but as a backup in case of malfunction.  So it’s not so much a goodbye as it is they’re being sidelined (I’ll see myself out)
    • Their forecheck is relentless because they are so physical and heavy.  It’s just a perfect mashup for how they play. Florida before Paul Marice played just like us. Speed but with finesse.  Paul made them but into playing heavy. They went and got players that added to that style he wants and it works.  Plus they have the best goalie in the league.  That helps more than anything. The canes have got let Koochie be their guy he will never become the star that most think he will if rod keeps sticking with vets that flame out.    1. Koochie or a Soros type player  2. Switch to zone defense  3. Get heavier.    like I said, I love Rod. Best pro coach ever in the Carolinas sports buy he is holding us back with his philosophy and style.  He is the reason.  He can change all of that with decisions.
