Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?

I would still give a serious look at Robinson and Jefferson in the later 1st assuming we make the playoffs, but yes I would give Darnold maybe a 2 yr 35 mil 14 mil guarantee type deal.

KJ Jefferson? He’s staying in college.

If we bring Darnold back, I hope to god we don’t, it needs to be a minimal as possible and if he doesn’t take it, whatever.

Darnold has done enough to warrant a contract offer.  The question is how much? I think he's played himself into a Trubisky-like contract (2 years, $14 million with almost all the guarantees in the 1st year). Any more than that and I think you let him go elsewhere and potentially nab a decent comp pick.

I wrote an article evaluating just that! I thought you all would enjoy so I am dropping it here. As usual thank you so much for your support! Happy New Years 🙂

I wouldn’t say no… but I still think he’s a career backup.

Eh. I’d only bring him back to start if there is no rookie worth it/trading up for. Because I’d rather stop chasing FA QBs and actually build a team at some point. And he will be cheap while the new coach builds the defense and gets weapons here.

Despite having the chance at winning a complete trash division, this team needs a lot of help. Which is another reason to say no to spending more on a QB other than draft picks.

There is still at least 2 games to play. After the season is over hopefully we will know whether this should be an option.

This is the answer. There will be times the next 2 weeks that Sam will have to lead this team out of trouble. If he can do it, give him an offer.
