We need a lot of help on defense.  A lot.

I said this last offseason.

A 3-5-3 of Karlaftis/Ridgeway/Brown - Luvu/Shaq/Lloyd/Chinn/Houston - Horn/Mathieu/Bryant. Trading Burns, moving Chinn to a flex SS/ILB position, moving Brown to a 3 tech DE, and going without Ioanidis, YGM, Littleton, Henderson, and Woods as starters would have given the Panthers a top 3 defense.

Trading Burns and trading down from the 5th pick in the draft was always the key to improving the defense. Burns will never be anything more than a pass rush specialist.

If we're going to a base 3 front why would we trade Burns? He'd be significantly more successful outside a 4-3...

    • height being an issue doesn't just mean batted balls.  You could argue Bryce minimizes batted balls by adopting other poor habits such as his jump passing and leaving the pocket.   As I said, there are plays you can point to where he clearly was blind to parts of the field/players....which kills plays and opportunity. Which actually means some of the shorter/hot throws when things break down are where his vision gets blocked (and he had below average production all around the line of scrimmage).   has he figured it out? I mean, he improved off a trainwreck start.  But Bryce Young since arriving in the league (even while figuring it out)......doesn't generate much offensive production vs his peers.
    • People make a lot of noise about his footwork and I think it is overblown. Whether he takes 3 steps backwards or 5 small steps doesn't matter as long as he ends up at the right depth and is in sync with  the receiver regarding timing. If he does that consistently who cares as long as he has a firm stable base as he delivers the ball. Which he does need to work on. However even that is somewhat overblown given that often QBs have to throw off balance or from different arm angles to fit the ball around defenders. He is considered very accurate so apparently it isn't hurting him that much.
    • Thank you for all the release metaphors!  It's helped make my morning 😃 But no...just eww..
