Like mountain climbing is dangerous. You can free climb that mountain (trade up to 1). You can also take action to minimize risk with safety equipment.

 

Free climbing is great for those who don’t slip. 

I totally agree, depends on staff evaluations but if they feel a guy is far and away better than the rest and they trade up for him I’m fine with it. They are the ones who’s jobs on the line with the free climb in this scenario I’ll trust them to make the call. 
 

I personally think Stroud and Young are far and away better and I’d rather go get the guy who will work out than sit and take the risk on guys that may not.

If you whiff on a pick, you move an asset in the future.

Would it suck losing Chinn, Brown, Burns, Horn? Yes. But you can get a haul for a single guy. Turns into a bit of a rebuild scenario.

If you never try, you will never succeed.

 

You have to shoot your shot. No year is perfect. I believe this year is our best year. I see a lot of 9-8, 10-7 years in the future otherwise, with no shot at a top QB. Time to stop the QB carousel for a few years at the very least.

That's a fair question.  We would need to have a high rating on all 3 similar to the Niners when they traded up for Lance.  It's a double edged sword really because if we wait and see if our top guy drops and he does say another team like ATL gets interested in drafting that same pick at 3 and it turns into a very fast bidding war.

It's only stupid if it fails. Trading up to #1 is not destined to fail.

You can't play scared. A lot of folks round here complain how we aren't aggressive enough on the field. But off the field, some people completely lose that menality. I don't understand it. Playing it safe has failed over and over again for the last 3 years. I think Reich and crew will do much better, but without the guy at QB, we aren't winning a SB. That guy isn't going to fall into our laps.

Is this the only way to get that guy? No. Is that guy available to fall into our laps? Right now the choices appear to be Carr, Rodgers, Jackson. I think Rodgers is the best shot, but he's a nutcase so who knows now. The other two are unlikely to win super bowls based on their past history.

I think it comes down to what is the goal? For me it's Super Bowl or bust. If it's back to back winning seasons, then a retread will be fine with this staff. Still spinning our wheels though, just at a different level.

Chinn is up for a mega deal after the season.  We (being rhule and fitt to a degree) have totally wasted rookie deals for absolutely nothing

How many years have we been trying to replace Cam, Luke, Olsen and Smitty? Plugging a hole by creating another won’t fix the dam…

We had 35 sacks as a team in 2023. Burns had 12.5 of them. No other D-lineman had half that many. Our 2nd leading sacker was Frankie Luvu, a LB,  with 7 sacks. Our DT's combined for a whopping total of 2 sacks. The Panthers would literally have no pass rush if we traded Burns.  With no pass rush our secondary would suffer as well. To make matters worse, with no #2 in 2023 or #1 picks in in 2024 and 2025 it would hard to replace him. You'd have assume you would replace that production with a rookie drafted after the 2nd round in 2023, or after the 1st round in 2024 and 2025. 

No way we should ever make a move like that...and expect to field a competent defense for the next couple of seasons. We need to trying to get Burns some help on the D-line instead of trading him.

I'm sorry, but I'm trusting this brain trust/staff completely over any of the clowns in here.

Whatever call this staff makes on a QB is going to be the right one.

A move like that could be franchise crippling.  Tepper will be the person to make that call because he has to hire the next person to clean it up if they make the wrong pick. A lot of people will be out of a job if they get it wrong.

      To me, his weaknesses sound like it's related to how the defensive line plays. If he doesn't trust the line to be where they are supposed to be, he may feel the need to jump on misdirection, he may have to commit more than he wants to one play type or another, and he was likely always getting head on blocks in A Gap and B Gap blitzing, rather than just getting chipped because his line couldn't hold their spot.  You can't coach his strengths. You can coach his weaknesses and you can help him by having a dominant middle.
