Offensively, we have lost a lot in the pass catching ability of CMC and now Moore.  That must be addressed, and I think it will.

I would add this, and it probably should be its own thread (and will be if any rumors materialize) but OBJ has to be looking at Carolina as a place where he would be the Alpha #1 WR--the panthers could get him for about $16m per season, on a shorter contract.   He would actually cost about $4m less than Moore and would not cost the team a draft pick.

There were 11 teams at his workout, so the Panthers are competing with a third of the league, it seems.  As aggressive as we are being, and as much as we need a #1 WR, I see this as a real possibility--and a draft pick at 37, possibly.

Here is where I got the $16m figure:  https://www.si.com/nfl/giants/news/odell-beckham-jr-has-his-workout-now-what

Yeah, and we had those 2 guys the past 4 years and did absolutely SQUAT without a real QB. Much better to have the QB spot settled and then try to get him weapons versus having the weapons and throwing darts at the board for half a decade trying to get a QB, all while those weapons get older, injured and more expensive.

A great QB with average WRs triumphs great WRs with an average QB (and we couldn’t even get average).

Sure but "average" these days in terms of wide receivers is still pretty damn good. The Chiefs traded for a WR from the Giants and he helped them win a Superbowl. It's still a very sought after position and there are only so many to go around. I get the vibe some people are high on hopium and convincing themselves this is kind of like replacing an RB. We'll see how it shakes out.

Why would you give $16m to that nutcase?

I researched some of the others, and there are better values, imo, but you could say the same about Steve Smith.  But it did cross my mind and never leave it (OBJ is out there).

I love the chaos our move has made within the draft. I’ve been reading a bunch of mocks, can’t find many without one or the top four quarterbacks going past seven. A few have all four QBs going in the top five. I’m feeling more confident than ever about this trade. A breath of fresh air from most years as a Panthers fan.

I have to assume that anyone who doesn't love this trade really was hoping we would get Drake. Otherwise it's a no brainier for the Panthers. I am very surprised anyone seeing this as a plus for Chicago. I believe Chicago did well but not nearly as well as I would have expected as far as the haul in return.

Don't listen to Ellis' podcast if you looking for excitement then. He and Billy are like a pool of depression.

C.J. STROUDQB, COLLEGE PLAYER
C.J. Stroud

Multiple sources report the "sense around the league" is that the Panthers moved up for QB C.J. Stroud.

That said, the Panthers themselves have made it clear they will continue to keep all options on the table as they now control the top of this year's NFL draft. There are still six weeks before the Panthers will find themselves on the clock, and free agency could see multiple dominoes fall at the quarterback position, but the Panthers now find themselves in control for one of the better quarterback prospects in recent memory. After giving up a robust package to move from the ninth pick to the 1.01, it appears clear the organization knows exactly the route they want to go to set themselves up for the future.

Not going to lie. The news caught me by surprise. If this had happened during the used car salesman's tenure, I would've been panicking. There is still some trepidation on my end because frankly, I don't really care for this year's QB class at all. But if this staff sees a potential future superstar QB that was worth making this move in the first placen, then so be it.

Stating the obvious but who we pick and what happens with this player is going to determine whether the Reich era (and likely Fitterer's) will be a short lived one.

Arob will be relatively cheap and Rams will pay some a large chunk of his contract, feel like he'd be a nice level headed outlet for Stroud in year one. Also has ties to our new OC last year in LA.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
