Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon

I'm assuming they see DJ Johnson as filling a major need in terms of a bigger OLB who is suppose to first play the run and then lead into a pass rusher.

I also assume this position is the same one they are envisioning for YGM since they are of more similar build so they would be competing for playing time with YGM obviously having the early advantage.

I guess this makes sense because we really don't have anyone else in that mold besides YGM right now so it was a big need.

Still wonder if we needed to trade up, but again, if he can contribute, it doesn't matter.

I don't think drafting DJ Johnson means anything in terms of still adding a FA EDGE. I think they will add one.

I also think this means the scheme is set up to let someone like Burns or Haynes to pin their ears back and just pass rush, which I'm sure they would like. Barno would be more in that vein also.

So, I do get that someone like DJ Johnson seemed to be a big need scheme wise and we didn't really have anyone else besides YGM with the traits Evero is looking for on the roster.

You can assume he would have been available at 93 based off of media boards but no telling for sure if he would have been.

It's been pretty obvious that NFL teams have this class graded very differently than the media does.

It's that way with every draft. You can count on it.

Tomorrow?

Chandler Zavala G NC State

Nick Saldiveri G ODU

Dawand Jones OT Ohio St

Blake Freeland, OT BYU

Corey Trice CB Purdue

Terrell Smith CB Minnesota

Darius Rush CB S Carolina

Good list ..

I really wanted to get a TE out of this draft but CB and Oline depth are bigger needs now..

We agree again.. When we went WR it cost us a starting edge player..

They really liked Mingo I guess..

My take was based on a guess of faith they had in TMJ. But as they say sometimes the best defense is a great offense.

Yea but this one has been wild even compared to normal. Most media guys that weren't scouts are scratching their dang heads right now.

A trade blows everything up. With as many trades that has happened so far has basically turned it into the wild west. In essence you just have to get a guy that you've scouted that's within reach and hope to find a trade partner.  That's if the cost is bearable.  Sometimes you get Intel through other trade talks that some team ahead of you is taking your guy forcing you to make a move, if you can get a partner. It's all a gamble.

If we get Chandler Zavala I would consider this draft a big success. Hopefully a corner thereafter.

This is a solid way of looking at it. Burns can do it all, but Haynes and Barno are just speed guys right now. YGM's probably the only one viewed as a power rusher and there is no one else on the roster for that role.

We like to think we can get guys with later picks but we're only basing that off of what we've seen from the various media outlets. There's not very many prospects that fit that power rusher profile that might have fit in that pick range and we clearly were afraid of what Tampa might do after the falcons selection and needed to get ahead of them. Maybe McGuire or Yaya who Tampa selected.

    • Also, the fact we are comparing this one to the 10 preseason tells me we are in for another horrible year.
    • Well, they're both in the same league (if you will). During preseason, Fitz went 3/3 & Sauls went 5/6, but of course Sauls was 4/4 last night (including one 50+). Both were Lou Groza Award finalists. I believe Fitz made two 55+ yarders last season, while Sauls led the nation with three. Fitz was 13/13 (💯) while Sauls was 21/24 (87.5). Fitz was a 3rd-Team AP All-American, while Sauls was a PFF All-American.  Career-wise, Fitz was 58/74 (78.4), while Sauls was 52/64 (81.3). I wish that I could see the attempts and knew the depth of yardage. I wish that we could compare practice kicks during their training camps, but we can't. Maybe someone with a PFF/CFF account can give that Basically it's just a matter of belief I guess. Seeing dude knock down four FGs and go perfect during a pressure-filled game for him is damned impressive if you ask me. I don't believe that Fitzgerald could do that.  That being said, I'd have to know more. I will say that it may be worth mentioning that we seem to like PFF this year and Sauls being a PFF All-American may be notable. Now that being said, the Panthers may not be even considering Sauls.
    • Ive said it 1000x times on here.  Our 2025 season will be dictated by the first 4 games.  poo the bed there and lose all confidence and momentum, we win 5 games maybe.  Go 2-2, 3-1 we got a look at 7/8 wins
