DE/Edge Rusher D.J. Johnson has tremendous upside and NFL type Talent but needs some technical polish and the Panthers have formed a good coaching staff that should be able to make that happen..

D.J. Johnson  showed off an impressive combination of strength and speed by hitting 28 reps on the bench press and running a sub-4.5-second 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine, but his technique is still a work in progress as a defensive lineman, especially as a pass-rusher.

Johnson is still learning how to use his hands when rushing the passer and lacks a go-to move that he'll be able to win with at the next level. However, he is strong and physical at the point of attack as a run defender and showed flashes with his bull rush.

He is a versatile edge who can play in either even or odd fronts. He will take some time to develop, he is still new to the position which gives him more upside.

Don't we already have this guy on the roster in Barno? Would've been super stoked to have BY, Mingo, Washington and our new guard with 2 more picks to go.

Barno is a speed rusher with work needed against the run, this is a bull style power rusher strong in run defense.  Very different.

This pick was a big reach but I'm more comfortable with this staff reaching than any of the previous ones.

I have no doubt that Evero was asked "of any defensive player left, or any edge left, which would you want?" With Caper's input, I'm sure, Evero said DJ Johnson.

I trust these guy more than any other staff we've had, and I trust them a lot more than any collection of draftniks out there.

Yeah, but there does seem to be some strong consistency between the last Rhule era draft and this one.   Some beat writers also pointed this out.  Which makes me think it’s Fitt and his scout team leading the show more than our coaches.   Also seems like the decision to go to #1 was a Fitt call….and they just hoped Reich would eventually agree to their consensus.

I’m still not super high on Fitt and think we should have had a new GM come in to start the new era.

    • I thought Winston was going to be a 10-15 year problem, sooo glad he went the better josh Freeman route. I mean prime Ryan, brees, and if Winston became that guy........Id hate to be a DC for Carolina.   The main deal is 1st overall pick goto the worse teams.  Looking at the list only Burrow has been able to break the loser mentally fog over those teams. Goff was reborn for the lions and you could make a case for him, but 2nd team. Luck and Cam are about the same, injuries ended great runs.  Burrow should get more MVP votes.
    • Mac Jones outshined Trevor Lawrence his rookie year. Now he is his backup. Let’s just see what happens and yes supporting cast and coaching matters. It’s what ultimately ruined Mac’s career and sustained Trevor’s.
    • Our future RHD room had a ton of question marks going into this offseason, glad we took care of 1 spot already. It's a good price and term for Chatty. Very good chance he outplays this deal but there is some risk of it being a slight overpayment for a guy more suited for the 3rd pair. If he and Orlov as expected wind up being our 2nd pair, I'm confident and comfortable in them being an above average 2nd pair, but we do have to see it first. It was ridiculous having them as a 3rd pair last year, though really too bad Pesce got hurt in the playoffs.   I don't think this rules out keeping Pesce necessarily but he probably walks. So we've got Burns, Chatty, Morrow next year. Not terrible if we keep the big forward guns like Guentz and Necas but if we don't we definitely still need to add to the RHD group IMO. Morrow ideally plays most of next year in the AHL. And Burns' play slipped down the stretch last year and he's going to be a year older and is already the oldest player in the league.    I don't want to trade Necas but if we do, barring him being just 1 piece in a big forward upgrade, I hope we get a legit cost controlled top 4 RHD back.
