Prior draftees (speculation from Person)

Like all the players on this list, Tremble was drafted under the Matt Rhule regime; Reich’s staff could have a different view of his skill set and ceiling.

Per his discussion of potential "surprise cuts" (all of which are prior draftees) Person seems to think players drafted during Matt Rhule's time as head coach might have a tough time sticking around under Frank Reich.

And yeah, that's logical: different head coach, different criteria and priorities.

Exceptions would be highly drafted guys like Jaycee Horn, Derrick Brown and maybe a few others.

I mean, we drafted Bryce Young.....so it is going to make sense to build the team up with guys that cater to what we need.   Which wasn't what we have had or had been drafed for.

Tommy Tremble doesn't fit a small ball quick pass offense.   You would have never drafted him if you were building an offense around Bryce Young.

we still have a lot to do on that front, which is normal.   We need some new TEs, WRs and frankly RBs to suit a small ball quick pass O.  We lack the quickness/separation and hands on a lot of fronts.

Weird - when you draft your former players rather than BPA...

From reading the article, it's not just that.

Remember back when Rhule was in charge we discussed how much he loved athleticism. Everyone had to have a great athletic score for him.

But in the discussion of Brandon Smith, for example, Person points out that Smith didn't necessarily have great college production. He was drafted on that athleticism that Rhule loved.

Reich seems to prefer guys that have shown they can produce on the field.

That's not to say everybody drafted under Rhule has a target on their back. Pre-season would tell you there are some they like. They just have to be able to show up on game day rather than look great and drills.

Bottom Line: Rhule wanted athletes.Reich wants football players.

Hell, you can see that in the distinction between the quarterbacks they drafted.

I feel like this has more to do with basic talent/production/underperformance vs. "Rhule guys".  If we end up keeping some of Rhule's draft picks (Barno, Mays, Christensen, Chuba) and get rid of others (Tremble, Corral, Taylor) then clearly everyone is getting a fair opportunity to make the roster, and are simply being evaluated individually on their own merits.

Exactly. The post above mentions the differences between the QBs drafted as if the #1 overall pick being compared to a 3rd round QB makes any sense regardless of their traits.

Also, we traded up for a guy who played all over and had 1 year as a full time DE and we picked Mingo. Both of them are clearly more athletic than college production guys.

The thesis that Reich is wants college production falls apart pretty quickly in our day 2 picks.

Rhule is a boogeyman to some and some people go through hoops to act like the current regime is the opposite. I’m very glad Rhule’s gone but I’m not going to act  like we haven’t see the same tendencies already without him. Hopefully, we do better because it hasn’t been fun to watch this show since the second half of 2018.
