Panthers closing in on hiring DAVE CANALES

Don't know anything about this guy except his success  with Baker and Geno.

If Tepper didn't shitt the bed with his antics and bad decision making,we may have had a chance at one of the top candidates.

Now we have to roll the dice on a guy with OC experience and a short resume. I have the feeling all the big names just had second thoughts about coming here and said fug no after some consideration.  He was one of the guys happy for the chance. No one else had much interest.

I hope for the best and expect the worst...

Good job

This is one of the stupidest decisions in team history. They are literally the only team pursuing Canales, you can at least wait until next week to talk to Macdonald, Monken, and Johnson and he will still be there with NOBODY interested in him.

God fuging forbid anyone with a spine gets the job.

I understand the sentiment, but I think it's pretty likely Johnson through his agent/back channels already let it be known he's not coming here. Monken would be intriguing but there's no Lamar Jackson here. I like Mike Macdonald as well but the only team that has requested a second interview with him is the Falcons who are seemingly doing a second interview with every single candidate (and I would bet they hire a HC pretty shortly here).

If you would have told me at the start of the hiring cycle that we were hiring Canales, I'd be very confused. The way that this has worked out, I am cautiously encouraged that it appears Dan Morgan had most of the decision making power. Hopefully, this is a sign Tepp is learning.

I do not think this is a short term project for either Canales or Morgan. Unless we are a complete dumpster fire, like we were this season, both are going to have to be given a very long leash. Our roster is bad. I think even the most optimistic projections would have us at 6 or 7 wins next year. The saving grace is an awful division, so long as ATL doesn't find a QB.

It does appear that this guy has an incredible work ethic, which is something you see in a lot of successful head coaches. I was very encouraged to see some panic on the Bucs board about him potentially leaving, up to and including many saying he should be given a "coach in waiting" title. It also seems he has some very good relationships with some NFL legends, so maybe we can get those guys in some advisory roles (Dungy, Carroll etc). Finally it seems the Bucs offensive players are pretty bummed about this one. Good for us.

I wanted a young offensive minded person to be the Panthers next head and  will be very happy if they hire Dave Canales.

I want a coach that will find success with the Panthers for a long time, so  they will be able  to build a system that enable them to become better year after year..

Tepper doesn't like a long leash....a choke collar and a piece of rope is more like it.

No head coaching experience on any level.  If this doesn’t at least give you pause it definitely should

Rhule had head coaching experience coming in and was still horrible.  I've come to understand all the qualifiers we typically look for are ultimately meaningless.  It's about making the right hires and building a culture that staff and players can thrive under.  If Canales can do that, I don't give a fug about his experience.  It really determines nothing.

...if its any consolation, Mike Tomlin was a DC for only one year before becoming a head coach... so, it can happen but not likely.

Tepper is an impatient, petulant man child. He probably couldn’t wait for Johnson.

OR....he could wait around for Johnson (or his agent) to keep jacking around for days/weeks, and by that time every desirable candidate would be gone.
