Wilks showed he will revert back to 90s defense despite going up against a Mahomes/Reid led team…you absolutely can not do that

I'm not Wilks' biggest fan but the dude got scapegoated. That D allowed 19 points in regulation to an offense led by Patrick Mahomes and ran by Andy Reid. The offensive wunderkind could t put up enough points. If you'd told him before the game their D would only give up 19 points and force two turnovers he would've very confidently told you what champagne he wanted for the post-game toast.

As a Panthers fan who rightly hates the 49ers I was pulling against him and laughing at his failures in the SB, but I really do like the guy and hope he gets another opportunity somewhere else. I've said before many times that I don't think he's a great DC, but he is one of the absolute best DB/secondary coaches and one of the best assistant HCs you can find. He's a great leader/motivator and great teacher, but not the best x's and o's guy or situational play caller. 

His defense here as DC with largely the same talent was much worse than McDermott's, I was shocked he got a HC offer so soon then but clearly AZ viewed him as a stopgap and never gave him a fair shot.

I doubt he was fired just for the superbowl, the Lion game defensive plan was putrid. Wilks is just too predictable and considering the talent the 49ers have on defense should’ve done much better. I do think he’s a good coach and would even take him at DC. But he’s predictable, won’t adjust, awful blitz scheming/predictability and he won’t be winning against modern teams that adjust well.

NFL teams always scapegoat.   Nothing is more predictable than that.  Often, you can see how org structure themselves to always have them ready to go.
