Canales on fixing Bryce's footwork

Recommended Posts

Bryce had no shot last year. From the historically bad interior Oline to the terrible WR's (except Thielen) and an offensive coaching staff with so much division and terrible play concepts that no matter what happened he was going to fail. I'm still convinced that despite all the reporting that it was a joint decision to draft Bryce I still believe that Reich wanted Stroud or Derek Carr instead.

If I'm Canales I tell Bryce to throw everything from last year in the trash expect for the Texans, Packers and the last drive from the rainy Falcons game. Take the times where the offense looked semi-functional and try to build on that.

i think reich wanted carr. reich is an old dog (not "dawg") who just wasn't interested in learning any new tricks or teaching any.

i agree with just about everything else. there was too much bad poo going on around the whole situation to properly evaluate and develop any rookie QB. and yes, a #1 overall pick or any rookie QB will have to have things worked on and thinking they shouldn't is just not an opinion based on reality. and thinking we saw enough last year from BY to think he's garbage is just as narrow minded, but whatever...

this year we will see what he can do and where he can or can't grow. last year was a throw away year except in giving Canales tape to see what they can work on.

Sure you can. Velocity, angle, air time, loft, accuracy. Every one of these can be measured without a receiver. Either he can get the ball there at an elite level or he can't.

We're talking about defenses crowding the box last year though. Could be because they don't think Bryce can throw it, or they saw our origami offensive line, or they knew our bozo coaches weren't calling deep balls, or maybe the league isn't afraid of DJ Chark. We don't know how much each part played into it. It could be any or all of it.

I admit I checked out as the season went on so I could have just missed them, but I don't remember many plays falling apart because Bryce underthrew. We're mostly going off the fact that we avoided going deep but I have a hard time running with the narrative that they were working around Bryce's arm when everything that staff did was inept and nonsensical.

It's all of the above. The OL sucked. The receivers sucked. The scheme sucked. The play calling sucked. And... yes, the QB sucked.

Their point is that a QB cannot succeed in that circumstance.   Not an argument that he's the answer either.  Just... lay off a bit and let's see how this season goes.

Some of y'all are really thinking that Stroud was the norm.  No, CJ Stroud's rookie year was the exception.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/browns-texans-playoffs-ranking-c-j-strouds-2023-among-best-rookie-qb-seasons-since-2010/

From 2010-2021 there have been 23 QBs selected in the top three rounds of the NFL draft to start 10 or more games.  Why did I stop in 2021?  Well, 2022 and 2023 are still fresh and the returns are interesting.

2022 brought us Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, and Matt Corral in the top three rounds.

We are most familiar with 2023, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, and Hendon Hooker.

That brings us to 28 rookie QBs since 2010 who started 10+ games as a rookie.    Sure, you have those top 8, but after that, it's a crap shoot.  Also, you can look and see that some of these guys peaked at rookies, some had sustained success, others were just meh.

Now let's go back to the Frank Reich era (so long ago).  They wanted to make sure Bryce could call the plays first before they worked on the feet and fundamentals.  That's why late in the season you had the "his footwork is terrible!" stuff come out.  The Reich way was the wrong way.  Would CJ Stroud as been as effective as he was in Carolina?  If you really think that, be careful buying things online...that's all I'll say.

Finally, some of y'all will die on a hill that Bryce Young is not an NFL QB for all of the reasons many of y'all continue to drum beat.  The stark reality is that this is kind of a make it or break it year for him.  If he continues to play poorly, then he'll be gone.  I think Bryce is smart enough to understand that his size outlier gives him less opportunity to show he can be the guy than someone like Sam Darnold, who continues to make good money by looking the part in practice.  If Bryce and the Panthers don't produce more offense (which puts butts in seats), then he will be gone and we'll be looking for a new QB again.

like how he implies after a year of tape, they still have to figure out what routes and concepts bryce is comfortable with

You’d rather him tell everyone which route concepts they’re going to emphasize?

But a QB can show the necessary traits to succeed despite being in a poo show. Bryce didn't. That's what concerns me. He proved to not be nearly as accurate as I thought he'd be and got hung up locking into his first read far too often while showing the footwork of River Dance in the pocket while the physical limitations that had me concerned proved to be considerably more limiting than I feared. It's a REAL uphill battle for him.

yep.  Special QBs show you the glimpses and moments even in bad spots.

I think there is no escaping Bryce's physical size issue paired with his natural tendency/instincts.  It takes too much off the table.  Ceiling will forever be low because of it and he is in a world dominated by athletic/physical freaks.

he threw off of his back feet when he wasn't throwing the ball into the dirt in front of him. Hopefully having better blocking will help, but dude rarely would step up in the pocket, step into his throws, and they were afraid to have him roll out probably due to protecting the investment.

All that talk about his throwing with anticipation went right out the window when he threw two ugly picks across the middle trying to do that in week one. He became a see it first then throw guy after that and that's a tough row to hoe when your arm is subpar. By the time you see it it's already gone.

Houston would have taken Young over Stroud. He was  consensus No. 1. Hindsight is 20/20.  Not sure why you are baffled.

Says who? If they wanted Young they could have traded up to get him.(Like I think Car was hoping they would do) Even before the draft Hou HC said " I don't think Car is taking the QB we want" so why trade up. They got the QB they wanted the OFF rookie of the year. Car tried to get cute to control the draft but was stuck at #1, even the owner said they was think Hou would get #1 and they would take Stroud at #2 so that came out his mouth.. No hindsight never wanted Young based on the tape before the draft. All was proved right with how bad a yr he had. Not saying he can't get better but all the major red flags from his COLLEGE tape showed up last year...

Hate when ppl act like everyone loved Young till he looked like poo...

    • He is a QB, on a rookie deal and Cousins is old coming off an achilles injury. Which QB they got is the part that is highly debatable if it was good. Yeah they could have used that on more tallent but Cousins doesn't win in the postseason so it wouldn't matter anyways. Chances are good they take the NFCS regardless this year or it goes back to a Bucs team that just breaks .500.
