Bryce contingency plan?

We don't need stats when we watch every play and know what happened.

For instance a couple three weeks back people listed his downfield numbers after a game or two and we watched him throw a rainbow ball that I think Coker came down with.

That was like one of the two throws past maybe 15 yards that he had completed. It looks great on the sheet, you can point to his progress,  but it was a wing and a prayer that worked out. The progress is that he at least threw the ball downfield so we had a chance, where he would choke on that previously.

It is completely about his footwork, let's just see what happens.

He's got some ugly balls and he's got some crazy good ones. Several of his KC throws were intense and he's had a decent number of difficult throws he's made the last few weeks.

I think a lot of people see "rainbows" and believe it's poorly thrown. That's not necessarily true.

I may be in the minority here, but I still don't think he will be here next season. He has done better but he still isn't playing like a #1 pick. I think his trade value is increasing and that's what they are hoping for.

You usually only get one shot at being GM, I don't think Morgan is going to put his eggs into Bryce's basket.

Now, maybe they keep him and have an actual QB competition next season instead of acting like he was out practicing Dalton which we all witnessed was likely a lie.

There is no contingency plan; the Panthers will be better if Bryce becomes a good QB, so we are going to give him every chance to make that happen. As long as he is playing at a level above awful, he will continue to be part of the plan because drafting a new QB essentially means starting over and neither the coach or the GM is going to make it though that.

I think you can say that if it's damn near every throw that isn't 5 yards. Lol

And what makes you think this?

Coaches and GMs are closely tied to their QBs and their choices at the position. The only thing that might possibly save Canales and Morgan is that they didn't choose Bryce, but the reality is, if he fails, one of them is most likely going to get fired, that's just the NFL. Then consider that we are the Panthers and have had 5 head coaches in three years and 7 since 2019, along with 2 GMs.

It doesnt look great.

I hold the opinion that the people fired over Bryce Young are already gone.

And the only way he gets Morgan fired is if we trade him (please) and he turns into enough to make us wish we hadn't let him go somewhere else.

I'm hoping Bryce plays well enough to stick around. This team is still thin at offensive skill positions. So adding to that this off-season with some more pieces on D should be the plan. Dropping another rookie QB into this side would put straight back behind the 8 ball

I'm thinking the same. A lot want to go all defense in the draft. That's okay if they bring in a vet #1 WR. Right now, it looks like David Moore is the best reliable target on the team. Let that sink in. Not exactly a good situation for another rookie QB. The oline is just ok at pass pro, so if they do bring in a rookie he better be able to run. That's the only way I can see him having success here right now. When is Sellers eligible again?

Call me nuts but I still think Sam Howell has a future and a huge upside. His first year starting in Washington with that crap offensive line, he performed pretty damn well. His TD's were up there as well as his passing yards. If he can control those Ints, he could be a very good QB in my opinion. Gun slinger mentality and not afraid to go for it. I still want him and still believe in him as well as have a feeling he could be had for cheap. His story is not yet written and the right coach could possibly get some serious production out of him. And no I am no Tarheels fan at all. I'm a fan of only one university because of my history there and ties to it so this is not a homer post. I simply respect his game.

He is better rehabbing his Winston/Favre tendencies as a backup for a couple of years at successful franchises. His path to starting(and likely failing again) in Carolina would be far too short with us.

TO prone gunslingers have not been in demand in the NFL for quite some time. It's not the talent that is the issue, it's the crippling TO's. If you want a QB like that, why not take the far more successful, talented and experienced Jameis Winston?

For all the lionizing of Sam Darnold here, same basic thing, TO prone(his TO's/game are actually UP on the season).

That's an outlier that has "worked" so far but ultimately you don't normally see TO prone QB's have long term success in the modern NFL. The margins are too small.

For context, BTW:

TO's Per Game Career

Darnold: 1.30

Winston: 1.14

Howell: 1.28

I must have young bias bc everytime he takes the field all i see is modern day jimmy clausen.  He is 32 in qbr in the league.  He had a few ok games and several horrific games.  J fields failed with bears and pitts dont see how he would become better with the panthers.  I will say staying put with young and bringing in fields at a high salary does sound like a tepper move though lol. With all that said if panthers win remaining games and young passes fof 300 yards and looks good then i will return to admit i was wrong.

This list also says that drafting a QB in the first round and playing him early doesn't work anymore. 6 out of 10 were 1st round picks with the last few years. Jones is the oldest one but he started his first season too I think.

So, probably drafting another 1 this season doesn't change anything for us for several seasons. No matter who is.

For the start of this year I’ve always assumed Geno would be our QB next year

I still think that

You could even have Bryce sit another year. No harm in that he’s still really young

I desperately want to move on from Bryce and I'd still rather roll with Bryce than trade for Geno or sign him as a FA to start if he's released. That would just seem like waving the white flag and shooting for mediocrity as the ceiling.

I think that will depend on how Young finishes the season. Let's say he plays well enough in their minds to keep him another season. In that case I think they look to draft someone later in the draft if one falls in their laps as a shot in the dark. They will probably try to keep Andy for another year. If Young doesn't show anything convincing going forward then I think they clean house.

    • I’m not necessarily advocating sticking with Bryce. His highs show the ability is there, but there’s enough bad film out there to doubt that he can consistently enough play at a high enough level. But this video from Brett Kollman is a pretty good argument to give it a bit more time, whether that be rolling with Bryce just next year or picking up his 5th year option (not extending him).      The gist is that the structural (wider hashes) and rule (3 yd vs 1 yd thresholds for intelligible offensive lineman downfield penalties) differences in the college and NFL have led to wildly different play calling and scheme diets in college. There is much more shotgun and RPO calls in college and screen/quick throws. This simply doesn’t set up young QBs to be able to play under center, which is more preferred in the NFL due to RBs being able to more effectively run out of that formation.  They don’t know how to do it and have to learn. Yes, the NFL has trended more toward college style offense in the last decade or so, but it isn’t that pronounced and is more out of necessity than desire. And on top of all that, they ask the young QBs to do all this learning with coaching and other personnel churn going on around them.  Bad results lead to coaches getting fired and new ones with different ideas on scheme and footwork and different terminology and playbooks coming in. It makes it harder on those young QBs to learn.     So we may drop Bryce for a young QB starter in the draft and be in a similar situation. With a QB who is going to take years to learn how to operate in an NFL style offense and will struggle along the way.  So you have to weigh whether the struggles we see from Bryce are more due to this learning process vs solely physical limitations on his part. It’s almost undoubtedly a bit of both, but the answer to that question I think dictates your strategy at QB over the next few years. And of course, you have to consider what the alternatives available are.    I’m neither a Bryce hater or a Bryce Stan and I don’t have an answer to that question. But I do fear that if we move on from him, unless it’s for an established player, we’re just in for continued frustration on the QB front because it’s going to take a few years for a college QB to develop (Drake Maye’s don’t grow on trees).
    • The defense has pulled that feat off this season though.  Multiple times. offense has not had a single good first half all season.  Only and good opening scripted drive paired with disappointing play.  defense has been the actual unit you can measure real and consistent improvement IMO.  Still holes and flaws to it that aren’t going away until new bodies get here but they really are the story of the season IMO
    • One thing about RB's and LB's is they are going to get hurt. It's inevitable. Having a fresh Chuba is not a bad thing.  My only criticism of this entire situation is that I wish our staff would adjust personnel to matchup a little better. I think Chuba is a lot better than Rico against the stacked boxes we've seen the last two weeks. They are very different backs with very different strengths, and I love them both. Rico is so good at identifying the hole early, and hitting it full speed early. He's much better at breaking the big run. Chuba is a much more patient back, and finds 3 yards when there's nothing there better than Rico.  It's in no way a criticism of either, but I think Chuba would have had more success than Rico the way the Saints and Falcons attacked us from a Defensive standpoint.  When you put 9 in the box, often times there is no hole to attack.
